Today, I am super excited to welcome Katherine McCaskey.  Let me tell you a little bit about Katherine before we jump into all these juicy details.  She is from Minnesota, up there in the cold.  She started Paparazzi back in November 2011, so coming up on 6 years.  She and her team just hit A-Lister in March which is Amazing!

She started Paparazzi Part time and now they do it full time.  And she’s the mother of 4 beautiful children.  Katherine has hit Crown Club 25 and is officially Life of the Party-Silver but unofficially this month, they hit Life of the Party- Gold.

Katherine, did I leave anything out.

Katherine: No, I think you got it all.  I’m so excited.

Awnya:  Thanks for joining us!  Let’s jump into the first question!

How did you get started with Paparazzi?

Katherine:  I was actually at an event for another company and next to my table of the products I was selling was a bunch of jewelry.  And I didn’t want to look cuz I get sucked into all sorts of Direct Sales stuff.

At the event, tons of people were leaving with these bags and I’m like, “I’ve got to check this out.”  So then a long story short, I talked with my sponsor.  And it took her a few weeks of getting a hold of me and she kinda talked me into it cuz I had just started something else.  The more I thought about it and the price point and everything I was like, “I’m just gonna go for it.  $5 accessories?!  How can you go wrong?!”

People were just eating it up.  Here I was at my stand with my product and there was not much movement going on, so I basically just started by going to an event and my sponsor just stayed on me and bless her heart for staying on me otherwise I don’t know where I would be right now.

Awnya:  I love that.  The follow up is SOOOO so important.  Just keep checking in with people and just make sure that you’re helping them out with any questions.  And its’ amazing the things that come from that.

What is your why?  Why do you do Paparazzi?

Katherine:  I love this questions because my why, and I feel like so many other people’s why’s, changes. As you grow, it changes.  But my why going into this was to make money. I’d say that 99% of people who join Paparazzi want some side cash. Then there’s that small percentage that just want to have fun and meet people.  But as we’ve grown and as we’ve built relationships with our team, their why has become my why.

They want to grow and they want to make money, so my why is – I’m in it to help my team grow and succeed because I know the potential and I see what can happen and the success.  So now, my why is my team.  I get up in the morning, I do it for them.  I cheer them on.  Every single day.

That is my current why, right now.  I love it.  I do Paparazzi because I love it.  And how could you go wrong.  This stuff is awesome!

Awnya:  I love that you kind of encompassed all of that.  How it was when you started and what it is now.  And I’m sure some of it still is the money because, like you said, you guys do this full time now. But, it has changed to include you team which is amazing.  Let’s kind of take a little bit of a shift.  We’re going to switch to your worst Paparazzi moment.

Now if you are a new listener, let me just explain this questions for just a second.  Because we aren’t bashing, we aren’t being negative. But a lot of people, we see these Elite consultants and how amazing they are and their rock star teams and it’s really easy to think that they’ve never had a bad day.  They’ve never had a bad show.

So this questions is designed to show you guys, to show everybody, that the Elite consultants have had bad days.  They’ve had the worst moments.  Some of their moments are even worse than what we’ve had and yet they’ve pushed through.

So Katherine, what is your worst Paparazzi moment?

Katherine:  You know, I love how you explained it because in the 6 years, we’ve had a lot of worst moments.  We’ve had really bad parties.  I mean, parties – you have your good parties and your bad parties and not every party is going to be good.

But you know, the first couple of years until you really figure out what to do to make those parties great, we had a lot of slow parties.  And we were like, “Is this really worth it?  We can’t get people to join our parties.”  But then I just realized the more consistent I was, the better they get.  The better our show does.  So no matter if you are a star consultant or if you are at the top of the company, you are going to have bad parties, but you’re also going to have so many good ones.

And also events.  Oh my gosh.  For those of you that don’t know, we have a trailer – like a bling trailer – and we do a lot of outdoor events in the summer.  And also when we do our booths, we have a tent and so we have out pegboards also displayed.  We have come across 40 mph winds, we’ve had rain.  We’ve had boards knock over on people multiple times.

You can’t fight Mother Nature.  We’ve had our fair share of bad events – weather wise – but you’ve just got to keep going and use that momentum to find that next good one.   And if you can keep that positive attitude and you just keep on going for the nos and going for the “no” sales, you are actually going to get more sales that way and more contacts and build your networking circle.

Awnya:  One of the things I love that you said there is, “Use those bad moments as momentum to get to the next good ones.” That is like a gem right there!

Another thing I wanted to ask you a follow up question about is, you said that the “bad parties” helped you learn how to make your parties great.  So do you have a couple tips on how to make your parties great?

Katherine:  I look back and I tell my team to do this too.   I kinda go over the party and see, “Okay, what did I do leading up to the party?  How much did I post?  How much did I prep my guests?   Did I do a traditional FB event where I’m posting pictures?  Did you excite people leading days up?”

Wording is huge!  Think about – what would get you excited to attend a party?  Just kind of reviewing what you’ve done and thinking, “What can I do to make it better?  What can I do to make it better?”

Look at people around you?  What are they doing?

It’s all about trial and error and adding things.  You know, 6 year into this, we are still changing the way we do parties to this day to make them better and building more.  So it’s all changing and like I said, trying new things and overlooking what you’re doing.

Awnya:  That’s perfect.  A word that I love is iteration.  To me, it means that you’re taking whatever is working now but you’ve got to keep changing that and keep adapting no matter what.  And I love that you said that because, I mean, you’re Elite. And to see that there’s not just 1 way to do it.  There’s a hundred different ways.

It’s just whatever works best for you and your customers and you just have to keep trying to figure that out all the time and keep trying to do better.  I love that.

Katherine:  I will say, my sponsor quit a couple of months after we started and I really didn’t have another upline.  And I’m not one to really ask for help.  I figured everything out on my own.  If you really want it, you’re going to do your research and figure out how to get it done.

Because I’ve done it and other people have done it and there are ways to make things better so you just have to really want to do it and if you do it, you’re going to see amazing things happen.

Awnya: Value bomb.  Like, Mic drop.  We could end right there and I would have learned so much already from you.  Let’s go to the next question though.

What is a habit you have that contributes to your success?

Katherine:  I love this question because in this business, the key, if there is a secret you guys, the secret would be consistency in everything you do.  Facebook posting.  If you have a team group- you’re posting in there every day.  If you’re signing up new team members, you’re being consistent about following up with them.   I feel like habit and consistency are kinda the same thing.

But for me not being a consistent person going into this, it was a little bit of a struggle and I can tell with my numbers when I’m not consistent.   But I think the biggest habit I have that contributed to my success and will contribute yours as you grow a team, if you choose to, is building those relationships.  Get your team groups going as soon as you get your first team member.  Post daily motivational quotes.  Post a challenge.

When you are going 3, 4, 5 days without posting you’re gonna loose that relationship and a lot of people need that drive from you.  So I do feel like my habit of posting with my team has definitely helped keep things growing because you build a relationship that way.

And the same with your customers.  So a lot of you guys probably have your VIP group on Facebook that you post your jewelry in when you order it.  And if you don’t, you totally need to get one because Facebook is a gold mine.  If you’re posting, let’s say you post one day 3 accessories and then you go 5 days without it.  Those people in your group are going to forget that they are even in a jewelry group.  So just be consistent in everything you do, even though sometimes it feels like forever and you aren’t seeing the results.

Those girls that I work with that are consistent and I stay on top of them are seeing BIG things happen so consistency is the key to success – if there was a secret.

Awnya: I love that you say that, because 95% of the Elite interviews we have done, that is the exact same answer, so you guys.  Take note!  Consistency is the key!  It truly is!  If most of the Elite are saying it- it must be true right!

So what is some advice you would give to a brand new consultant just getting started in their Paparazzi business?

Katherine: I love this one because it happens all the time.  Every single day.  There is always someone out there who just doesn’t know where to go.  You ask for help.  I know, I have my team page.  People know they can come to me but not everybody does.  You need to make sure that you are reaching out to your sponsor and if your sponsor is not active, your next upline or leader.

If you don’t know who they are, you need to call corporate and figure that out because there is someone who will, you know, help you.  And if you are that uncomfortable with getting the help, then you need to challenge yourself.  Say, “Okay, you know what, I’m going LIVE once this week.” or “I’m going to go hand out 20 business cards.”  Challenge yourself.

Sometimes you feel like you are just out of your comfort zone and it gets uncomfortable when you think about these things but that truly what’s going to make it work.  So, when you are feeling stuck, that’s your sign to reach out for new ideas.

Awnya:  The thing that I loved right there that you just said was that you need to get outside of your comfort zone!  Because when you are in your comfort zone, nothing is going to change and that fear that you feel when you are getting outside of your comfort zone it is saying that something is new.  But it is also a sign that things are changing.

And if things don’t change then you are going to stay in the same place.  If things are changing, then they can get better.  So it’s a good thing to be outside of your comfort zone and to be challenging yourself and to be moving forward.  Even though its new territory and it’s kinda scary, it’s a good thing.

Now, if you could suggest 1 thing to a consultant who is feeling totally stuck in their business, what would tell them to do?

Reach out for help.  Find your upline.  Figure out – write down and logging what you want to see out of this.  When you kind of have a number goal and figure out what you want to make, it kind of gives you a better idea of how to go forward.  And what you need to do.  Do you want to make $500 profit? How much jewelry do you need to sell?  Having that visual is a really good motivator, I think.

But also reaching out.  There’s always someone up the line or in your team groups that will help challenge you or get that momentum built back up.

Awnya:  And a lot times those people aren’t going to come looking for you.  If you need help, sometimes the signs aren’t there.  Whether it’s finding someone on YouTube that you can emulate or learn something from one of the Paparazzi leaders or, like you said, finding your upline or your across line or somebody to help inspire you and get you motivated, right?

Katherine:  Yes, they are out there.

What is a quote that inspires you?

Katherine:  So this one has stuck with me since I started team building.

Katherine McCaskey fav quoteAnd what I love about this is, I know with my team, I watch my team build team members and customers.  And, you know, team members go in to it really wanting to make it work and then they don’t want to do anything.  They ask for help and you tell them everything you can do for them.  You send them ideas and they don’t do anything with it.

You can’t force someone to order.  You can’t force a team member to party.  You can’t force somebody to sign up.  But as long as you are being a good sponsor and you are giving them all the resources, you’re doing your job.  It’s up to them to take it and run.  And not everybody does.

Some people start this and you’ll never hear from them again.  Sometimes I feel like they just feel bad and just don’t want to tell you that.  It’s not for everybody but as long as you’re there, that’s all that matters.  Just remember, don’t waste your time trying to force people work it because if they really want to, they will.   Especially if you have all the information and you know that they have all the knowledge they need to have going forward.

Awnya: What I love right there that you said, is that you gave them resources, you gave them things to inspire them.  But it’s not like you’re showing up at their doorstep saying, “Let’s go do a party.” “Let’s go do an event.” They still have to want it.  They still have to do it themselves.

What is a book you’d say is a must read and why?

Katherine:  I will admit, I am not a huge reader.  However, I have started more, especially getting into the Elite because we do get a lot of books.  I like magazines, like the gossip magazines and I don’t even read that much.  But I will say, the books I have read – and there are so many leadership books out there.  You can just google it.  And I highly recommend it because you will learn a lot more.  You think you know it all and you really don’t.

But the one that I really like is The 5 Love Languages.

Your customers, your team, your friends and your family, we all have different ways of living life and how we do things and how we love and how we like to be rewarded.  In The 5 love Languages, it kinda teaches you about each language and you can really start to put it with your team and your customers.

So, for example, not every one of your team members wants a phone call.  Some people like to be rewarded with a gift.  Some people just like to be acknowledged with a shout out.  So it really helps you kind of figure out the different people you are working with and how to cope with them and work with them.  So I definitely recommend the 5 love Languages, it’s really awesome.

Awnya:  So with your team do you have like a survey that you have them take or do you just get to know them and then figure out which love language they have or how do you apply that in your business?

Katherine:  I kinda just figure it out.  There is a questionnaire a long time ago that we got from corporate, but with our team size, it would be really hard to put it out there and then keep track of every single person.  However I have some from my personally sponsored.

The more you build your relationships and get to know them and you know your love languages, you just kind of figure them out.  Who they are, what they like and, yeah.

Awnya:  It’s more about that building relationships and just knowing who you are working with.  I love that.

Katherine:  Yes!  That is key!

Awnya:  It totally is.  Last question.  So here on the PapaRockStars Podcast, we like to do a weekly call challenge.

So what is 1 thing you would challenge the listeners to do in the next 7 days to take action in their Paparazzi businesses?

Katherine: I’m going to challenge you to do this in 48 hours, but you can do it in 7 days, but I extra challenge you guys to do it in 48 hours.

A couple of years ago when I was feeling stuck, I had someone from corporate challenge me.  She was like, “I want you to do a Facebook party.  I want you to give it your all.  I want you to make people excited.  I want you to do everything you can think to make this your best Facebook party ever.”  This was just a regular Facebook party.  She wanted me to have it done in 48 hours.

I had so much other stuff.  We had 4 kids.  I was like, “Oh my gosh.  What am I going to do?”  I could not-  I had to get it done.  I wasn’t going to not do it and come up with all these excuses.  I did it.  I sacrificed sleep- which is one thing you will do if you really want to grow a team fast or grow your business fast.

Let me tell you, it was my BEST party – times 4 – that I have ever done in my life because I gave it my all.  I sacrificed my time.  You know, we have time.  It’s just all how we fit it in.  There’s plenty of time to do all this stuff.  So I think back to how I did that in 48 hours, I’m challenging you guys.

You probably have heard from corporate and from your upline that Facebook LIVE is changing the way that Paparazzi is in the business.  It is exploding like never before.  It is multiplying sales.  So, it took me 3 months to start doing them. And it took me probably a good 10 times before I actually could go into it and not have to go *deep breath* cuz I was so nervous.

But I promise you, you will get over being nervous once you start doing them, they are actually a lot of fun.  And you make a lot of contacts and you make a lot more money than any other Facebook party out there.  So I challenge you to do a live party within the next 48 hours, if Awnya’s okay with that – changing those rules.  Putting the pressure on.

And if it really makes you uncomfortable doing it and you haven’t done one before.  Just get on your phone on your camera and just, you know, do a video camcorder.  Just to kinda get your feet in or whatever.  But just do it.  Don’t care about what other people think.  You know.  So, even if it’s just 10-15 pieces.  Just getting your foot in the door.  But I promise you, if you stay consistent and do them 2-3 times a week, you are going to build your network.

They key is to have your friends and family share.  Give out a free accessory if someone shares your video.  A lot of people be like, “I can’t afford to give out a free accessory.” but that one accessory can lead to so many customers.

I guess that’s my challenge.  That’s what I recommend doing.  Get on a schedule.  Like my husband said, if you get on a schedule, like when people get home, they turn on the 6 o’clock news.  So if you get on a schedule, your customers are going to get on that schedule too.  And they’re going to know, “Kat’s on at 6 pm tonight, I’m going to get myself some new bling.”  So get in a habit and use consistency and you could totally blow it up.

Yes, Facebook live is huge, but I also feel like it’s still really ground level.  Like yes, people are doing it, but there are billions of people to still be touched.  So if you get in on this now, while it’s starting, you are going to build a team like no tomorrow.  And customers.  And sales.

Bridget just celebrated her fifth year with Paparazzi.  She is life of the party Bronze and she has reached Executive Producer.  She is one of our newest Elite Leaders.  Bridget is also Crown Club 10.  She has 3 beautiful kids and she is from the cold, cold Minnesota.  Bridget, did I leave anything out?

Bridget:  I love how you said, “the cold, cold Minnesota” cuz that is so true!

Awnya: Well, let’s jump into the interview questions!

What got you started with Paparazzi?

Bridget:  Oh my Goodness.  Well, honestly, this was never the intention.  Like, Home business.  Nothing like that was ever the intention that  I wanted to do.  I had just had my second child and at nights,  like all night cuz I’m breastfeeding and I like, couldn’t get any sleep.  It was really just not good.

And Facebook was like my go to like my go to.  Just cuz there’s like so much stuff on there and I would just like so bored. And the garage sale sites in our town started to like started to boom.   And I didn’t have a job and my husband was off working away – like really far away.

And I was just so bored and I just remember seeing this little advertisement on one of the yard sale sites. And I was like,  “What?! No way!  Like five bucks?!”

And I like really missed my first daughter’s childhood because I had her when I was very, very young and I started college right away. And I actually did like four years of college plus a certificate and also I went to the Minnesota police academy, like all at the same time. And I did it all in two years.  And so I missed a ton of her childhood and so when I got pregnant with the second one, I was like,  “This can’t happen again. Like, I can’t miss their childhood. Like, I want to stay home.”

 Charles was making really good money but not like great money, but we were definitely like penny pinchers for sure.  I saw the advertisement, and at first I was like, “oh, I don’t know.” Chasity Peterson is my sponsor and she had already sent, she has sent like all this info for me.  And was like, “Oh, it’s so awesome!” and was like,  “It’s only 5 bucks.”

And I had all these questions and I spent all night, like literally all night, talking to this woman on Facebook. And by morning I was like, “This is what I want to do.  Like, I’m gonna do this because literally I loved the fact that we could stay at home.   We didn’t have any like quotas or anything like that and it was affordable.

In the town that I live in, it’s a smaller town.  It’s definitely a place where everybody’s looking for like a good bargain.  Everybody is looking for like a good sale price.   So I knew that it was going to be really popular here. And I haven’t heard of it, so that means nobody else probably heard of it.  I was like all over Facebook all the time.  So it was just one of those things when I’m like, Alright! I’m definitely going to do this.”

The only thing that really kind of killed it at first was that it was a $300 kit when I started.  They  didn’t have the $99 kit.  That was a lot of money.  Like, a ton of money to get and Charles did leave me with like a big chunk of change because he was going to be gone for like six-weeks.  But, I didn’t want to use any of that money.

So going back to the garage sale sites.  I went through my house and sold so much stuff.  And it was just ridiculous.  Like who the crap needs three crockpots?!  If you have three crockpots, like, there is something wrong.  I’m sure that half the women right now are like,”I have three crockpots.”  You don’t need three crockpots!

And I didn’t even know I had three crockpots.  There was just so many things in my house that I was like, “I can do without this right now.  Like I don’t need it and I know that someone else will buy it.  And so I just like went totally mad wild.  And it took me a week.  That’s it.  It  took me a week to come up with all the money for the starter kit.

And that was basically it.  I joined five days later.

Awnya: What an amazing story!  And I love how you said that you had to sell like your extra crockpots to get your starter kit.  Cuz a lot of us have things kicking around that we don’t need and we could just sell that extra blender…

Bridget:  Like, do you really need a quesadilla maker??  Probably not.  And I sold mine.

Awnya: Right?  And now you could buy 15 of those if you really wanted them.

Bridget: Exactly!  It’s perfect.

What is your Paparazzi why? Why do you do Paparazzi?

Bridget: I started doing paparazzi because of the money.  When I started…like, I liked jewelry.  I’ve always liked jewelry but I never was like, “I’m gonna wear a ton of jewelry” or “I’m gonna have jewelry that matches everything.”

I probably had a couple pair of earrings, like a really nice, nice necklace and that was like it. And like a ring.  You know, and it wasn’t that I didn’t like to wear jewelry, it’s just that it wasn’t a necessity me.

So when I started, it definitely was like about the money.  And it was just so nice to pamper myself.  It was so nice.  It was so incredibly nice.  I just did not want to live paycheck to paycheck anymore.  I knew how to make like $50 last on a family of four like for two weeks. And honestly, the majority of it was like beans, rice and Ramen noodles.

It wasn’t that great, you know?!  I just, I didn’t want to live like that anymore.

Awnya: Pinching pennies is so, so hard.   Like we’ve been there so many times and actually when – I think I’ve shared this before on a different call, but when I purchased my starter kit my husband had been unemployed for five months.   Like we were living the definition of pinching pennies.

And that is one of the things that drove me personally to Paparazzi because I was determined to never be in that situation again.

Bridget: Exactly.

Like, yeah, I was determined to make that solid foundation for our family so we wouldn’t have to live like that and scraping from paycheck to paycheck.  So I love that you said that as well.

Now, have you found that your why has change from when you started five years ago to being an Executive Producer and having a huge team now?

Bridget: Oh, my gosh, yes!  It definitely has changed like so much.  And I feel like it’s always going to change because you hit another level and so then you kind of persevere for more.  So obviously  when I first started it was the money. Like, I just wanted to be able to help us out.  Charles was working so much.  I never got to see him, ever.  The kids never got to see him. And, so then it changed.

Like at that point, once I started making money, and I made so much money the first month.  Like, it was crazy.  I had my lunch party like the day that I got my kit.  Like as soon as my kit was there.  And I didn’t have displays.  Like, I didn’t have money to buy displays.  Are you serious?!

I didn’t have any of that!  We had this like black sheet.  It was a bedsheet, you guys.   I washed it.  Don’t worry.  I washed this black bedsheet that I had.  I have no idea why I had a black bedsheet. Don’t ask.

 And I like put boxes underneath, like different sized boxes underneath it tp make like different levels of things – like layers and stuff.   I just like draped the jewelry on the table.  And that was it.  That was legit, my entire display.  I didn’t have anything else and I wasn’t willing to spend any more money because I had like just spent $300.

I went to all my neighbors – I lived in a townhome complex and I didn’t know like half of them to be honest.  And I would just like knock on the door and it was embarrassing.  Like at that point when you don’t have that much money and you are like on medical assistance, food assistance, and you’re trying to get by, you don’t have shame.  There’s no room for shame.

Right?! Like you just need to go out, put your pride aside.  Like this is what I’m doing.  There’s nothing wrong with it, like, come over.  Like, we can have some drinks and you can look through all the stuff.

And that’s exactly what I did.  I went to all the people in these townhomes.  and it was crazy,  because these people showed up and I didn’t know them, which is really weird to be honest that they just like came into my home and I’m like, “Oh, hey!  Come and check this out.”

So it’s kind of cool because it really opened up to people that I would have never probably gotten to know and they came into my home.  And I sold 97 items out of my kit.  So our kits had a hundred items.  It was a $300 kit and it had 100 items.

And I sold 97 items.  And I just remember like after everybody left, I like just bawled.  It was like crazy.  And that is seriously when I knew I was like, “Oh my gosh. Like, this is it.  It’s totally going to happen.  Like, I’m going to be able to do this. I’m going to be able to help out.”

And I never told Charles, just an FYI.  He did not know the entire time.  He did not know when I bought my kit.   I like totally kept everything from him because I was so worried he was going to be mad at me for spending over $300.

Like, selling all this stuff and having a big chunk of money and like not doing something like more productive with it.  Like, productive in his mind.  And so I just remember like, “I’m not gonna tell him.  I’m just gonna keep selling.”

So I did 17 parties my first month and it was so crazy.  The first thing I bought ever, ever was a freezer chest.  It sounds so stupid cuz you’re like, “A Freezer chest?!”  But that was like a sign of having a lot of money to be able to like pack food away because I wasn’t able to do that.  Like, we didn’t have like a ton of food in the cupboards.

It was like a freezer chest.  Like, I could see a light, like the halo light coming down, like, “Ahhhhh”.  And it was so awesome.  So that’s really like my why. Now, if you were just like “What is your why?” Like, today, my why would would be  like to retire and be able to have like a good chunk of change for the three kids to have when they like turn 18 and go to college. And to be able to like travel because I love traveling and I love to camp.  So I think that would be my why if you were to ask me like right now, that would be my why.

Awnya:  I love how it has morphed from like a chest freezer, which I mean, let’s be honest.   Minnesota- nine months of the year outside is a chest freezer, right?!

Bridget:  Ha ha ha.  You’re like, “Why did you buy that, Bridget?! Like, you have one outside!”   Did I mention we lived in a townhome complex?!  You couldn’t keep stuff outside, K??

Awnya:  That’s true!  That’s true.  Ha ha.   And now, it’s morphed into retirement and financial freedom and that your dreams have just expanded exponentially.  I just love that.

Well let’s jump from that super inspirational why.  We’re going to shift into your worst Paparazzi moment. That moment that you could’ve give it up because let’s face it we have those hills and those valleys, and everyone, even the Elite Leaders in Paparazzi experiences that.

So that’s kind of the basis behind this question is so everybody else in Paparazzi will realize the Elite Leaders probably have had worse moments then they have had up to this point.  And to kind of humanize you guys little bit.  So, Bridget take us to moment.

Tell us a story of your worst Paparazzi moment.

Bridget:  So, obviously now, Paparazzi is like my life.  Um, and life, I mean I work a lot.  I work a lot.  Me and Awnya had talked about this before, like socializing and things like that is super hard because I feel like a lot of my friends now are Paparazzi people.  Paparazzi is definitely life.

And while I haven’t had any like specific moments in Paparazzi were like something happened in Paparazzi where I wanted to quit, but when you have, okay like, a regular job and they always say like leave your family at the door.  And then when you’re going home leave your business at your business.  You know what I mean? Like, don’t bring it home.

And so with Paparazzi that has kinda like been the biggest thing where there’ll be like certain things.  If something affects me in my life, it almost affects my business, which is really hard.  Because we… as a consultant we’re – we have to be very, very highly motivated.  So you have outside things that happen, it’s really hard to keep your motivation when you can’t just show up.  It’s not like a regular job where you just work the hours and you still get paid.

You might work the hours, but if you’re not like putting in energy and working at stuff that actually is like worth something and it’s going to like push your business better then it doesn’t help.

So I had to like give you that like little backdrop before I go onto this.  *sigh*  This is such a big deal.  So, uh, Charles.  Oooh.  This is going to sting.  Um, we realized that we just were not good for each other anymore.  In August of last year, we decided that we were going to separate.  Which you can imagine, was super, super hard.

And I got to tell you, there were definitely days that I did not want to work, where I would wake up and I just, I didn’t even want to do anything.  Nothing.  It just was so hard.  It was so hard to talk to team members and try to motivate them when I wasn’t motivated myself, like at all.

And that was when I wanted to quit I wanted to just be done I didn’t want to do it anymore and it wasn’t because I didn’t love Paparazzi.  It was just that, my life in general, my life wasn’t happy, you know? And so I remember just being like, “Maybe I should just quit, you know?!”

I was a Premier Producer and I just didn’t have my heart in it anymore.

I just remember like one day being like, “Bridget you have all this stuff.  You have to pay for this.”  And that when my why like we talked about before like really changed back to, “You have to survive now because you have three kids and you have the house, this beautiful house, that you have to take care of.  You know, and you need to do this.”

It wasn’t a option anymore. Like, I couldn’t just…like having the three kids you can’t just like sit back and let bills collect and stuff like that.  And so what I did was, I just remember like, I watched some really sappy movies.  And “The Pursuit of Happiness”.  Oh my Gosh!   I remember watching that like three times.

Sometimes you just need to cry right?  You just need to get it all out and I just bawled and I bawled and I bawled. And I kept thinking like, “Alright.  You have to do this for the kids.  It’s not about you.  This isn’t your life.  It’s your kids’ life.  You need to make it better.  You have to keep going.”  And so what I did is, all of this energy that I had thinking about my failed marriage, basically, I put into my business.

Instead of sitting there and, you know, sobbing over, you know, what I did or didn’t do, I just took all that energy and I was like, “I’m going to talk to someone.”  And the first day it was really hard.  It was really hard to just get on the phone and just talk to somebody.  Because nobody knew this was going on.   So in the process of this, nobody knew.  Our family didn’t know, nothing.
Charles had moved out.  He got his own place and I really just didn’t want to talk about it with our family just because that was really hard for me to accept. We didn’t know if that was gonna be like a finalized thing. So instead of like, going out and hanging out with friends, I really just focused on taking care of my kids and running my business

And I’m not gonna say that it was like a blessing but I did rank and I made Elite.   So there is a sunny side of it.   So, when you asked me if there was a time that you wanted to quit, it definitely wasn’t because of Paparazzi. I mean, but that definitely was a time where I was just like I think I’m just going to quit.

Like, I can’t handle it.  I can’t do my life and not think about all the wrong that was going on at that time and try to motivate other people when I didn’t have any motivation myself.

Awnya: Bridget, I just want to take a minute to acknowledge how emotional that was for you and thank you for sharing that with us.  Because those are the moments that your life and your business – they’re totally intertwined.  And those are the moments where you do have to find your inner strength and go back to that why.

And sometimes it’s not super fun but the thing that I love the most about that is,  can -everybody listening – can you tell how real Bridget it?  Like, she is truly genuine.  She’s passionate about what she does.  She’s passionate about Paparazzi.  She’s passionate about her family and I think that just come through so much.  So I have to thank you for sharing that

Bridget: I’m just like a really big baby.

Awnya:  No. No, you’re passionate and a lot of passionate people, those emotions are just so close to the surface.  So, I love that.

Now, what is the lesson you want everyone to take from your moment?

Bridget:  I have a lot of team members that will message me be like, “I think I’m going to quit.” and I have to be like, “Why?  You know, why do you thinking about quitting?” And the funny thing is that the more that we talk,  it always ends up coming down to outside things.  It always ends up coming down to not anything that has to do with the business but there does not they are not having a good time in their life right now.  Like it’s just not a good time.  There’s lots of pressure from the world.  There’s pressure from families.

You know, maybe your husband doesn’t believe in what you’re doing.  Maybe, you know, your family members don’t support you because it’s just a direct sales thing.  I have to tell you, I had that.  I totally had that.  Until I showed them a paycheck and was like, “What’s up?”

They didn’t believe in any of the stuff that I was doing.  They thought it was such a scam. They thought it was so stupid and nobody – none of my family members showed up to my lunch party.  And it was very devastating for me.  Because that was something that I really, really wanted to make it work and I believed in it.

And so, just don’t let outside things steer your life.   Steer your life away from being progressive and inspiring and just doing awesome with Paparazzi in general.  Don’t let that happen.  If anything do what I did and use that energy to really put into your business.

Awnya: And that might be a really good reason to be in touch with that why like your core why you started Paparazzi.  Not like a superficial, “Well, because it’s fun,” because then when things get difficult with your life or with your business you can definitely come back to that.

Now, Bridget, what is a habit that you have that contributes to your success?

Bridget: It would be consistency for sure.  Definitely consistency.  And it’s not just like consistency with just selling or just recruiting.  You gotta do it all.  You have got to do it all.

My consistency is daily, all day.  I make lists.   I am always posting in my group.  I’m always talking to team members, I talk to at least 4 of my team members a day.  I go through my first levels and then I move down the levels.  And I just call people and talk to them. It’s really cool because when you do call them, you really kind of like piggyback ideas off of each other.  And I have a lot of team members that when I’m not feeling inspired, just talking to them there’s like so like, “On my gosh.  I’m so excited!”  Especially like brand-new team members.  I love talking to them.

They’re just so excited and they’re just so new.  And I’m like, “Give me that energy like pass it on to me!  Like, right through the phone, please!” Cuz I need that.

Definitely consistency.  I know of people, especially… this is my full-time job.  Obviously I get, I stay at home.  I don’t just like sit on my butt all day.  I’m always doing things around the house. I gotta keep it clean because I’m OCD.  And I live here and I’m always here.  I do schooling with my kids.  There’s a lot of stuff that’s going on. And so my consistency is 15 minutes.

And I know that sounds really weird,  but what I do, then I’m able to do a lot of stuff throughout the day, is I do each thing for 15 minutes. That means I go do laundry for 15 minutes.  I go do the dishes for 15 minutes I call some team for 15 minutes.  I post for 15 minutes.  I do ideas for 15 minutes, like write down in my journal some ideas. I watch an inspirational video for 15 minutes.

It’s all 15 minute increments and that’s how I have been able to do a lot of stuff and then I  also make sure that I take a break. And I think that’s another thing that a lot of people forget.   Is that you need to take a break.  Your mind needs to take a break.  So I do a lot of meditation.  Do medication in the morning, when I wake up.  I know that sounds weird because you just woke up so your brain is not really working, but it really does help to relax.

And I noticed, before, I would wake up and almost be like in a frenzy.   Like, “Oh my gosh, I have so much stuff that I need to do.  I need to get out of bed now and get dressed and get the kids and make some lunch and make breakfast and…”  La la la – All the stuff.   Now I wake up and meditate for a little bit so I  definitely make sure that I take some time for myself and for my mind and my heart.

And I take time out for the kids I will spend – obviously I don’t do the 15 minute rule with them.  It adds up to be a lot,  I swear.  But, 15 minutes is definitely one of the things – the consistency – it has helped so much throughout the years that I’ve been with Paparazzi. It has definitely helped a lot and doing lists.  Oh my gosh.  Lists help so much!

With women in general, they always have a ton of stuff on their mind and we’re kind …we’re like squirrel chasers.  We’re the dog that sees a squirrel and they’re like “Squirrel!”  You know?! We’re those people.  Cuz there’s just always so much going on and so it definitely helps.

Consistency is definitely something that I really push my team on.  To always try to sell something every single day.  Always talk to your team numbers.  Always try to recruit every single day.  Always do a booking blitz every single day.  15 minutes you guys.  It really, really does help.

Awnya:  I need to get better at doing 15 minute chunks because I tend to hyper focus on one thing.  Like today was cleaning the kitchen.  So my kitchen looks great but the rest of my house is trashed and I didn’t work near as much on my business as I probably should. So I love that!

Bridget:  Ha ha ha.

Awnya:   15 minutes and then break so if I can clean the kitchen for 15 minutes and then do something in my business.  And then spend, I don’t know, like 35 minutes running kids everywhere.  Whatever you need to do, but at least you’ll get that 15 minutes to get there feel like you’re using as much energy if you really do a focus 15 minute chunk in there.

Bridget:  It doesn’t feel like you are using as much energy if you really do a focused 15 minutes because you’re changing what you’re doing instead of focusing on something for, you know, a couple hours. You’re gonna get tired and you just can’t focus anymore.  You do small increments of focused things but then you’re changing them up so it’s not like your brain is getting tired.

Awnya:  Now do you have a timer that you just set for 15 minutes and then you just do something really quick or…?

Bridget: I sound so hard-core don’t I?!   I’m not that hard-core, no.  I sound really hard core, but, no, I just, you know.  If you think about, it takes 15 minutes to do the dishes.  Legit.  If you do dishes every single day,  it will probably take you a good 15 minutes to do the dishes.

People don’t realize how long 15 minutes really is.  Going do a work out – a cardio workout for 15 minutes.  You know how long that is.  Now think about it the same thing with clean.  It never actually takes me 15 minutes to fold one load of laundry. You know, it takes me probably 10 minutes.  One load you guys.  One load, not four loads.  One load.

You know, so things like that.  It only takes me 15 minutes to do certain thing, you know.  Maybe dust the living room.  If it’s a focused 15 minutes.

Awnya: I love that word – focused.  And I think that the morning meditation – I think that, at least for me, that’s what I find really helps with the meditating in the morning.  Not to quiet my mind or to organize my thoughts from the day.  It’s to gain that focus and that direction that I need for my day and just start out with the calm.

Peace and a direction instead of waking up like you said, kind of haggard and like, “woah, ok, let’s just go, go, go!”

Bridget:  Yes!  Exactly.

What advice would you give to a brand-new Paparazzi Consultant just getting started in their business?

Bridget: Stop thinking so much.  I love that people think so much and that they want everything like planned out specifically and accordingly.  And it’s so perfect.  I love that.  That  is me. But stop doing that.

Just start.  The day you buy your kit, start. Tell people about it.  Don’t wait until your kit comes.   And then, you know, think about having a lunch party.  Or ask somebody, “Hey, what do you guys think about doing a party?”  Just do it.  Just Start.

Don’t aim.  I remember Misty Kirby one time, and I can’t remember the training. I think it was at convention and I want to say it was at Paint the Town Pink.  But she talked about how businesses, like our businesses and like selling isn’t like aiming a gun and shooting.

You don’t, like normally when you going to like a target practice you are going to aim it and then you gonna shoot. And with Paparazzi it is not like that.  You shoot.  You just shoot.  You know, and then you slowly aim as you’re shooting.  And so you tweak things a little bit more.

Because everybody’s business is gonna be different.  Everything is gonna work different for you.  What works for me might not work for you.  What I do when I sell maybe you don’t want to do it that way.  And so just do it.  Just start.  Don’t think about it. Don’t think about what people are going to think about you about selling this.  Just do it.  Just sell it.

Awnya:  What a great analogy and if you’re shooting and you’re shooting consistently like think of a MK 47 or an automatic machine gun – I don’t know my guns very well if you can’t tell.

Bridget: You’re gonna hit something!  You’re gonna hit something!

Awnya: if it is going, Du du du du du du du – You’re gonna hit something with all of those bullets versus taking a handgun and going phew.  Phew.

Bridget:  Like trying to aim.  Yes. Definitely, our business is not like that.  It doesn’t need to be perfect. You know there’s all these people that are out there, “I want to do a really fancy display” and they put all this money into their displays.

Some of my team members have spent hundreds of dollars on their displays.  And I’m like, “What are you doing?”  “Oh, I need to buy business cards and I need to do this.” Are you serious?!  Like I had a sheet.  I had a sheet and that’s all I did.

I didn’t even have business cards when I first started.  You know, it wasn’t about that it was just about selling because I had the product.  I don’t need my business card to sell.  Does it help in the future?  It totally helps, but I already have what I need to sell it and that is the product.  I don’t need anything else.

Awnya: And a lot of times I think people are trying to hit the bull’s-eye and they’re trying to get things through on the first shot.  Like growing up, my mom used to say “Almost only counts in horseshoes and hand grenades” and I’m gonna throw Paparazzi in there! Because somebody’s gonna see you slingin bling and they’re gonna be like, “Dude! I want 60 bucks… I want to be able to pick up my kids and pick up a $120 too.” So it doesn’t have to be exactly perfect you just have to be getting it out there.

And so that’s about the new phrase, “Almost counts in horseshoes, hand grenades and Paparazzi.”

Bridget: Exactly. Exactly.

What would you suggest to a consultant who is feeling stuck in their business? What would you tell them to do?

Bridget: This is a really hard question for me because I think it all depends on what type of team member you are.  So if you’re the type of team member that needs a list to do something and that’s what motivates you is just like getting things done and you just need somebody to tell you what to do,  start selling right now!

Book a party do about Booking Blitz, do 10 parties in one month, talk to five people per day, give somebody a compliment, and know your business.

But if you’re somebody that you needs to be motivated in a different way, like in your mind… I’m definitely one of those.  I talk about lists a lot but I definitely need my heart into something.  Like I said, what’s your why?  And you talked about that before too.  When I was going to do all of my family crap in August I had to switch.   I had… it wasn’t about like having fun.  To be honest, my heart wasn’t in it.   It wasn’t.  I was just there, but I knew that I needed to make money because I couldn’t get behind on my bills.

I was paying for everything. I have a house, you know, that’s $800. I have the van that’s another $300.   Phone bill is $200.  Natalie’s dance classes, the food,  bills, the dentist,  everything  That was my motivation.  So if you have to switch your motivation and switch your why, then that’s what you need to do.

You know, if you have another job – I always notice people that have other jobs their  motivation is lost because they have that other job to fall back on.  So I get it.  I understand and that’s okay.  That’s definitely okay.  Obviously, the reason why you joined Paparazzi was to make some extra money. You know, maybe it’s not to do this full-time.   Maybe you should just do some side stuff and make some extra money.  Well then,  figure something out that you really want to buy and put that down, and figure out how many pieces that you need to sell.

You know, talk to your sponsor. Oh my gosh I know so many people that don’t try to get motivated from other people and I have to reach out and I’m just like, “Why are you not motivated? Like call me.  Talk to me.”  Talk to them on the phone. Watch an inspirational video.  You just, you gotta switch it up.

Awnya:  I’m gonna highlight a couple of things I jotted down while you were giving that advise.   You said, talk to your sponsor, watch an inspiring video, make a list, book a party, or get back in touch with your why.

I think any of those things are golden on their own, like knowledge bomb, but I’m sure there’s other ones in there I missed as well…

Bridget:  There’s so many.  I get it, right?!  It’s hard.  We’re women.  We’re up and down like nobody’s business.  So make Paparazzi your outlet.  Make Paparazzi your happy place.  I get super, freaking happy when I see my PayPal account like jump up.   I get so excited when I had a really good party.  I love when my oldest comes down and does like a live video with me because she just thinks it’s the coolest thing ever.  To be on Facebook, because I won’t let her have a Facebook account.

 You know what I mean?!  I love seeing that and so I can tell you right now, like once you have a good party, your like, “Oh yeah, I’m really back into this is.   Like, I don’t even know why I stopped.

Awnya:  I love that!  It’s so true.  Sometimes it’s the little things that will get you back in with your whole heart and working it again.

What is a quote that inspires you?

Bridget:  And I absolutely love… I love this.   I’m definitely one of those people that has learned how to embrace the highs with the lows.   To me, life is definitely just a bunch of waves. And so you have to know how to ride the little ones and you know how to ride high ones and to get on that board.

And I don’t even surf, but I just think this is absolutely beautiful.

Awnya: I completely agree. That’s one I haven’t heard before but I’m in love with it now.  Like, I’m going to have to like stitch it on a pillow or something!

Bridget:  I’m sure we can find something.  It’s all over.

What is a book you’d say is a must read and why?

Bridget: So I really like the book Failing Forward.  I’ve read it like 10 times now.  It’s so amazing.  It’s definitely something that I have a hard time failing.   So this book is all about changing your perspective.

And it’s not just like about business, it’s about everything.  And I think that’s what I love so much about the book is that there’s tons of things that you can utilize in your everyday life.  And I think, like, one of the best parts – it talked about that failing, the word failing and to fail is totally subjective.   It is all in how you look at it and, like, what you perceive it is.  So this book is really good because it will definitely change the way that you look at things perspective wise.

Um, the other books, and it’s books – it’s a series.  And I know this is going to be like, “What?!”  It is basically any of the Harry Potter books.  And I know, I’m such a kid but let’s just give it up to Harry for being like the raddest kid ever.  Like totally looks like he’s gonna fail.  Like the kids hate him, pick on him, but he’s just such a cool hero.  And there’s just so many good books are just so big in my life.

Like I think I was in like sixth grade when they came out so don’t be judging on this little geek over here, but… There’s just so many life lessons that you can learn from Dumbledore himself if you wanted to.   There’s some really good quotes that he had throughout the books and I think the series is so awesome.

I know that sounds so funny because it’s like a kids story book, but it really is true.  There’s so many life lessons that you can learn from these books if you kinda delete the magic a little bit.

Awnya: Oooh!  I love that!  So, Failing Forward and Harry Potter series.

Bridget:  Yes!

Awnya: Perfect!  Okay. We’re down to the last question!

So here on the PapaRockStars podcast, we like to do a weekly call challenge. So what is the one thing you would challenge the listeners to do in the next seven days to take action in their Paparazzi businesses?

Bridget:  Alright.  So the next 7 days.  I know Paparazzi did the #NoExcuses and that really was like, no excuses, and so I’m not being totally original… because I kinda am, but I’m not okay.

So the next seven days – for one week – you need to like literally eat, drink, sleep Paparazzi.   Sell every single day.  You need to talk to at least like two people about joining or just about –it doesn’t even have to be about joining.  Like, “Oh, hey. Do you want to join?” It can be like, “Hey.” You know, talk about how much you love Paparazzi.  And maybe they ask you a question on like –  have do you been doing this for a while?  And kinda go a little bit beyond the answer. You know, things like that.

Talk to a couple people a day and just be consistent like totally consistent, hard core.  100% focused.   Working for seven days.   Because I guarantee you, there’s people that only work week their business like a couple days a week.  And I’m like, “Oh my God.  You can’t complain anymore if you don’t – like if you’re not working that much.”

If you are working three hours a day you need to up your hours most definitely.  Especially right now because it is crazy.  So for seven days – so we’ll break it down for you.

Seven days – you are going to be totally consistent every single day.  You’re going to post in your customer group, and try to sell something every single day.  Do a Booking Blitz every single day, that’s a good one.  And also talk to 2 people every single day about anything Paparazzi.

Awnya:  That is perfect!  Bam!!  What a way to end the call.  Can you guys see why I love Bridget so much?!  She’s just amazing!  I love her energy.  I love her spirit and her spunk.

Now, let me tell you a little bit about Michelle, here.  Michelle is a Maven A-lister.  She has, as of the time of this recording, about 9568 team members, so they’re getting close to 10,000 team members.

Michelle joined Paparazzi in June of 2011, so she is coming up on her 6th anniversary with Paparazzi.  Michelle is Crown Club 25 and Life of the Party with Bronze access.

She lives right in the heart of Utah and she was the first one in Paparazzi to hit 2 Elite ranks in 1 year.  That’s happened a couple times since then, but Michelle was the first.  She was kicking butt and taking names.

Michelle is the busy mom of 5 boys.  And let me tell you, if you think that you are too busy for Paparazzi or if someone is telling you you’re too busy for Paparazzi, just take a look at the things Michelle does in 1 day and it’s more than most people get done in an entire week.  So that’s not an actual excuse.  Don’t let that hold you back.

Michelle has also been married for 24 years to her husband Kelly and they have a beautiful family.

Michelle, did I leave anything out?

Michelle:  No, I think you got everything.

Awnya: Awesome.  Well, let’s jump right in!

How did you get started with Paparazzi??

Michelle:  Well, first of all, I wanted to say thank you so much for having me on the call today.  I’m super excited to be here!

So my paparazzi journey started obviously back in 2011.  And I was actually the PTA president at the time at my little boy’s school, at the elementary school.

And one day, I was at the school, I was doing something PTA and I walked into the teacher’s lounge and there was the cutest display of jewelry set up in this teacher’s lounge.   And I happened to spy this pink ribbon necklace that was hanging on this board.  And all I knew was I needed to get my hands on this necklace before my board members who were walking behind me got to it first.

So anyway, I grabbed that necklace. I grabbed a few other necklaces and then, at that point, I noticed on the table there was a little honor envelope that said, “Everything is $5.” And I thought, “No way! There is no way this jewelry is only $5.”

I grabbed a few more pieces and along with that I grabbed the business card of the girl who had left that cute display in the teacher’s lounge.  I called her up, a total stranger, and I said,
“You have got to come do a party for me!”

Of course she was more than happy to oblige.  And she came and did a party for me.  I invited all my friends and family and had an amazing party.  In fact it was over $800.  During the party, this consultant had mentioned about becoming a consultant and the advantages, but it never even occurred to me that I would do it.  I had never done direct sales before, so basically it went in one ear and out the other.

It just so happened, when I had called my sister to tell her to come to my party, she says, “Hey, I’m having one of those parties.”  Luckily I got my party in first, but because I’m a good sister, I went to her party and supported her party.

What I loved about it was, when I went to her party, it was a different consultant and it was a completely different inventory that she had there.  So I picked a whole bunch more pieces at that party.

And my niece had called me when I had told her about the Paparazzi party I was having.  She said, “Oh I think that’s the stuff that [her friends’ sister in law] was doing.”   And so just after having my party and seeing how much all my friends loved it and just swarmed to the pieces, and a lot even still like me, not knowing how much it cost.

And then going to my sister’s party and seeing the advantages of the individual consultants having their own selection of jewelry and more opportunities to buy, I said to my sisters, “This is something that we could do together.  This would be fun.”

I have to tell you that they all looked at me like I was insane because I am so busy all the time.  And I was especially busy then.  But every day was like a frantic race to get people where they needed to be and in a lot of cases I had 3 boys that had to be somewhere at the same time and my sisters were the ones I was calling in tears because I didn’t know how I was gonna get everything in and be everywhere I needed to be and they were the ones helping me out.

So to suggest adding 1 more thing to the already busy schedule that we already had was insane to everybody.  But I don’t know.   There was something about this jewelry. There was something about it.  I had seen the excitement around the people when they were shopping and I thought, “We’re doing this.”

And so, they were reluctant, but I’m convincing and I’m passionate about the things that I want to do and I talked them into it.  We signed up and away we went and we never have looked back.  We jumped full speed in, started partying, and have loved it ever since.

Awnya:  Now I seem to remember in the Paparazzi breakout session, that you were saying the day that you actually signed up you like asked your husband for his credit card… Remind me of how that went.

Michelle:  Yeah. So, When I do something I want to go big and I knew that I wanted to have lots of inventory.  I knew that women want choices and so at the time when I signed up, there was actually a bigger kit that was $700 I believe it was, $699.  And that was the kit I decided to sign up with.

I thought, “Well, I’d better let my husband know that I’m doing this.”  I formed it in the form of a question, even though I already had my mind set up that I was gonna do it.  Now when I asked him, he was actually sitting down and watching a game.

And so it was kinda the perfect opportunity to broach the subject and I could tell that he was only, you know, only half listening.  And I was actually quite surprised when I said “Hey, I wanna sign up and do this cute jewelry business,” and he kinda just gave me the nod of approval and said, “Alrighty then.”

So then before he even had a chance to change his mind, I hit the submit button.  Not gonna lie, I almost threw up myself when I did that because I didn’t know anything about direct sales.  I didn’t know anything about Paparazzi other than it was super cute, women loved it and it was $5.

So I hit that submit button.  Now I don’t know if he has some kind of an alarm on his phone that tells him when I spend money or maybe it’s just over a certain about of money I spend, but within minutes of me hitting submit, I could hear him stomping down the hallway and he’s like, “What did you just spend $800 on?”  And I said, “I asked you if I could sign up for this jewelry company.”

And he – at that point it was too late, it was already in.  And I will tell you, it took him a matter of days, if not less to realize the potential of this business.  And with guys, it’s all about the money.  He’ll tell you that every day, every time you ask him. And he actually loves this business and loves to be a part of it. He’s very supportive.  And like I said, it didn’t take him long to jump in with the program

Awnya:  That story totally makes me giggle cuz my husband, it’s a similar story.  I talked to him about it and we discussed it for quite some time because he had actually been laid off and so we really didn’t have a source of income.

And he’s going, “You want to sell jewelry, but you don’t wear jewelry.” And was like, “Well, but its $5 jewelry.”  And I’m sure to him, that didn’t make a whole lot of sense.  So his very first paycheck, we needed to pay our rent.  We needed to pay all of our bills we hadn’t been able to pay but I took what I could and we bought a starter kit with it.

And within 4 days I had sold all of that and ordered 4 more times because I’d sold so much of it so quickly.  And he said – 4 days after I’d started, “Well, why didn’t you start with the bigger kit!?”  And I’m like, “Hunny, at the time, you would have killed me if I had gotten the bigger kit!”

Michelle:  That was the same thing for us.  I signed up with that big kit and I was thinking, “What did I do?!?”  But I had planned a “pop the box party.” I knew when my starter kit was going to get there.  I called a few friends and neighbors and sisters and they brought a few friends and we just had lunch and they got first dibs on my starter kit.

And just between that little get together and then people seeing me so excited about it and wearing the jewelry around.  I sold more jewelry out of that, that I had to order again before I could even have an official launch party.

Awnya: People don’t believe us when we say, “It sells itself!”  But it really, truly does!

Michelle:  Yes, it does.

Awnya: Well, let’s jump into the next question.

What is your Paparazzi why?  Why do you do Paparazzi?

Michelle:  Well, I get asked this a lot and honestly, I always have a hard time putting it into words.  And it’s not because I don’t have the words, it’s just because it means so much to me.  Paparazzi has been such a blessing in my life.

It has done more for me and my family than I can ever begin to express.  I love that I have a “job” (and I’m doing little air-finger quotes here) that allows me to be a wife and a mom.  I have, like I said earlier and Awnya told you, I have 5 boys and they are so busy.  They are into every sport imaginable and a million other things as well.

When I say they are busy, we have on average 21 games a week, between the 5 of them.  There was 1 particular Saturday that had 14 games in 1 day.

But there’s more to it.  I love that Paparazzi allows me the flexibility to be that wife and mom and I can work my business around it, but like I said there’s more to it.

There’s often times that as a wife and mom, so much of our days are consumed with the wants and needs of those around us that we can sometimes forget about ourselves.  With Paparazzi, I found something inside of me that I never even knew I was missing.  It stirred up a passion and a drive within me that I am so proud of and that I hope makes my family proud too.

I’m good at it and it’s my thing.  Obviously, in a house full of boys, there’s not a lot of girl stuff going on.  But, it’s more than that.  It’s something that I do and that, I’m good at.  I love that I have a business and a successful business at that.  There’s a lot of times that my boys don’t even realize that I have a job or that I work.

There was one day and it was one of my older boys, he was 18 at the time.  He had called me into his room and he needed money for somethings.  And the way he asked me kinda put me off.  It was like, “Hey, Mama, I need money for this,” and I said, “Well, too bad that you don’t have a job that you can have the money to pay for it.”

And he looked at me and he says, “I don’t need a job, Mama.  You know, you give it to me.” and I said, “I work hard for my money.” And he just looked at me and was genuinely confused and he says, “You don’t have to work.”

And at that moment, first of all I wanted to smack him upside the head because I work hard at my business. I give it a lot of hours, but I can work it around their schedule.  And so I have managed to build one of the top teams in Paparazzi.  And I work and I make a really good living and my boys don’t even know that I have a job.

So while I was frustrated with him that he thought that, and I thought he was a spoiled brat, I have to say, I’m there for them when they call and they need a homework assignment run down to them because they forgot it sitting on the kitchen table.  Or if there’s a field trip or a choir concert or if they are sick at school, I don’t have to ask the boss if I can leave.  I’m there for them and they don’t ever have to doubt that.

But also about my why, it’s about the AMAZING people that I get to work with and associate with.  I love that I get to work with them and help them take steps to make their dreams come true too.  I love the hostesses and customers that I have and I just am truly so blessed to have this kind of a why as far as my Paparazzi goes.

Now do you feel your why has changed a little bit from when you first started till now being a Maven A-lister.

Michelle: Oh, for sure. It has changed.  And it has changed many times.  When I first started it was on a whim.  I loved the jewelry and I loved the price and I thought it would be something fun to do with my sisters.

And I tell you though, it wasn’t long before I knew it would be so much more than that, and to evolve to where it is today.

Awnya:  What a powerful why.  A lot of what you say resonates with me so deeply and I have a hard time not getting emotional when you talk about being there for your kids.  That touches me so deeply so deeply so thank you for sharing that.

Now we are going to take a little bit of a shift.  This is actually one of my favorite questions because a lot of times, consultants, myself included, we see you Elite as, you can do no wrong.  Like, you’ve never had a bad day.  You’ve never had a bad event.  You don’t even know how those go.  And so I love hearing this story, your worst Paparazzi moment, because it helps me realize that you know, you guys have had those bad moments too and you picked yourself up and you kept going.  So Michelle,

Tell us about your worst Paparazzi moment

Michelle:  When you say “worst moment”, I don’t know that I could have anything super specific as far as that goes, but I will tell you that there are a lot of frustrating days.  It’s hills and valleys.  And one thing that I think people need to know is that doesn’t ever change.  It’s from star consultants – brand new consultants – all the way up through Impressionista.  You just have to know that it’s not always gonna be good days and fun times.

I would have to say though that there was a time when I stopped having fun with my business and I got comfortable with being where I was.  I let actions and negativity of others influence my attitude and the energy I had towards my business.  I think it’s so important to always be shooting for something and to have goals.  Don’t ever be fine to be where you are because there is always something awesome ahead waiting for you to decide you want it.

And I’d forgotten about that.  I’d been going for these goals and I got to where I wanted to be.  And I guess I was fine to be there and I stopped working like I did and I stopped having fun with it.   And my husband said to me one day, because he could see me.  He could see that I wasn’t in the place where I had been with my business.  I said, “Well I don’t know what you think is wrong.” And he said, “I think you’ve stopped having fun with it.”

And it was so true!

It’s also important to get rid of the negative influences in your life and in your business.  Cuz when you keep things positive, it honestly makes a world of difference.  I needed to stop looking and being influenced by these people around me.  I needed to just keep my head forward, focus on what my next goal was.

And make goals.  I think there are a lot of people that you get to a certain rank and you lose belief in yourself or you think, “Oh, that’s going to be too hard to get there”

I tell you what, I was there.  As long as you think that way, you will never get to that next step.  And it wasn’t until I decide that I can do this and that I needed to be an example to my team and to those who were watching me, that my business started moving again and things turned around for me.

Awnya:  So don’t forget the fun factor, right?!

Michelle: Yeah.  And that, you know, your business is your business.  It’s up to you to get out of it what you want.  You don’t need to rely on anybody else to do that.  You have resources, you have help.  And people want to help.

Don’t worry about what everyone else is doing or saying.  Give your best self to everything you do.  Stay focused on the road ahead. And right, most of all, have fun.

Awnya:  I think my favorite part that stood out in your moment there was that you said, “There’s hills and valleys.  It’s not always going to be good days and fun times.”  And I often times forget that as a Mom and a Paparazzi consultant.  So I loved that!  But

What is the lesson that you want to highlight from your worst moment for the listeners?

Michelle: I think it would be just those things, is that you need to set goals.  I’m a firm believer in goals.  Decide what you want, where you want to be.  And it can be small things and it can be big things. That’s the beauty of this business is that the things that I want out of it, might not be the same thing that other people want out of it.

And as a leader I had to learn that.  When I talked to my team members, it was okay if they didn’t want to team build.  It was okay if they didn’t want to do home parties and chose to do it their way.  Because as long as it’s working…

It’s important for me to be an example and for those of you who are listening, be an example to those around you.  And be positive and encouraging and focus on your own self.  Don’t look to the left or the right of you and compare yourself to what others are doing.

That was what I was doing.  I saw other people that maybe were going a little bit faster or doing things maybe a little bit better or at all and instead of focusing on myself and how I could make myself better, and improve on myself, I was always comparing to others.  I guess that what I would ask others to take out of it.  Be proud of yourself and the actions you are taking and set your goals and go after them.

Awnya: Goals are so important. Somebody said once, if you don’t have a goal, it’s like trying to get to a destination but not knowing how to get there.  Like if you didn’t know you were going to Disneyland, and you don’t put that in on the GPS, you might end up at Mount Rushmore.

I completely agree, goals are so important. Michelle,

What is a habit you have that contributes to your success?

Michelle: I would think the number one thing is consistency.  You just have to be consistent with your business.  You need to do something every day for your business and it should be as much of a habit as brushing your teeth.  Wake up and before your feet hit the ground, think about your day and all you need to accomplish.  Then decide how you will work your business into it.

 Obviously we’ve talked about me being so busy and every morning when I wake up, I think, “Okay, what do I have going and how am I going to work something about my business into my day.”  Because sometimes I can fit a lot in and sometimes I can just fit a little bit in.  But what’s important is that I’m consistent and every day I do something.

And there are days that I know that I’ll be running all day long and going to be in the car, so maybe I’ll plan for phone calls in the car while I’m waiting at carpool pickup.  My bling bag is always with me and my business cards.

And I always have my jewelry on regardless of how I’m dressed.  Cuz sometimes I’m out and about in sweats.  But dang, I have a necklace and earrings on for sure.  My life isn’t getting any less busy.  It seems as though they grow up, they’re only getting more busy.

So I have to always find ways to stay consistent with my business even with a busy lifestyle. And I do.  That’s the beauty of this type of business.  You can work it in to any life style if you choose to do it.

Awnya: I liked what you said right there at the end, “If you choose to do it.”  It is definitely a choice.  Like, when I sit down at night and instead of posting new pictures of jewelry into my sales group, I watch an episode of Bones or NCIS. Or maybe both, you know, cuz Mom’s had a hard day.

But if you are serious about your business and you’re making those consistent steps, it’s less appealing to maybe watch 2 episodes of somethings on TV.  Like, that’s something I’ve definitely had to let slide as my business has started to grow a little bit faster, a little bit more and I don’t mind it because I’m so committed to what I’m doing.

Michelle, what advice would you give to a brand new Paparazzi consultant just getting started?

Michelle:  I would say, GO ALL IN.  And I’m saying that in all capitals.  Don’t doubt yourself.  Be confident and get after it.  Don’t wait till your starter kit to arrive to start working and promoting your fun new business.

You won’t know all the answers right now.  It’s okay.  The passion, confidence and excitement that you have for your business is what will draw people in and they will accept the opportunity with the same attitude that you present it.

Awnya:  Passion, confidence, and excitement.  I love those 3 words.

Some consultants start to feel a little bit stuck in their business.  Maybe they are in one of those valleys that we talked about earlier.

What is one thing that you would suggest to them to maybe get unstuck?

Michelle:  I would say, find yourself a business building buddy.  Reach out to your sponsor or upline.  There’s too many times where people give up because they need help.  They get discouraged.  Maybe they run out of ideas and so on.  You have strong uplines and sponsors.  And you have fellow team members who are there to help you and most of all they want to help you.

One of the things I have done with my team is to arrange Business Building Buddy groups and usually there are 3-4 in a group and they work closely together.  They share ideas.  They encourage each other and in most cases they become the best of friends.

Whatever you do, do not give up.  There will be times where you feel like nothing you do is making a difference.  Nobody is paying attention, but I can tell you this with all certainty, every little effort you make matters.  People are watching and they want to see you give up because it makes them feel better about their hesitation to join you.  So you show them.  Be consistent and confident.

Plant seeds daily and before long they will grow.  I can tell you that I will make posts on my Facebook timeline… I have over, I think, almost 3000 friends on my timeline.  I can make posts about my boys and my family, random things, and I’ll get comment. I’ll get likes.

And then I’ll post something about my business and a lot of times it will be crickets or it will be other Paparazzi consultants commenting and so I was kind of feeling frustrated and maybe even a little embarrassed.  I’m like, “Oh, maybe I shouldn’t be posting about my business.  People don’t like it.”

I even had my son say to me, “Mama, nobody comments on your Paparazzi posts.”   He is my one that really worries about me and doesn’t want my feelings hurt.   I think it was his way of saying, “Don’t do it.  Don’t post,” you know.

But then, this is what I learned… There are people that knew too much about what I was doing about my Paparazzi business and the jewelry.  And out of the random blue would contact me to have a party or even join my team that had never once commented on a post.  They had never said anything to me about it.  They had never called me.  There was never a conversation, but they knew.  There will be people who go to see my husband, he’s a dentist, and they can tell him about what I’m doing in a day or where I have been . .

Just stay consistent with your business and do not give up.  Reach out to your upline and sponsors and find a business building buddy.

Awnya: I’m gonna highlight a thing that you said there that really stood out to me.  You said “Every effort you make matters,” and “There are watchers.”  People that never comment, never say anything and they are just watching you.  So you just have to keep putting it out there.

Because the efforts, they matter in the long run.  Like you were saying a few minutes ago, when you go out and you’re in your sweatpants, but you still have on Paparazzi, people notice that.  Keep pushin’ through.

What is a quote that inspires you?

Michelle:  I think one of the quotes that inspires me, it says:

This helps me because, honestly, with the schedule that I have and the business that I have, it’s crazy.  And I most of the times can’t even focus on tomorrow until 10:00 the day before.  Because I get anxious about it and I feel like I’m falling short, and that quote helps me to feel reassured that, you know what, I have these 24 hours.  I’m going to do everything I can.  And it may not be enough, and it may not be all that I need to be doing, but I’m gonna give it everything I have to give.  And that’s okay.

Awnya:  It helps you be more present in the moment too.  Enjoy the people you are with more, enjoy more of what you are doing instead of worrying about the past or the future.

What is a book you’d say is a must read and why?

Michelle:  I love Sarah Robbins.  Her book, Rock your Network Marketing Business: How to become a Network Marketing Rock Star.

Sarah has a great story and is super relatable.  She is passionate about what she does and teaches in a way that it just clicks.  She has some of the best tips and I always find myself coming away with a new charge for my business when I read her books.

She does have several books in a series and she also is on Facebook.  She just has a light about her and when she speaks it’s in a way that people can relate to.  It’s not big words and extreme ideas.  Its simple concepts, basics that will work in your business and her books just kind of spell it all out.

Awnya:  She is amazing.  I think she has a newsletter that I’m on and I like, devour those.

So what is 1 thing you would challenge the listeners to do in the next 7 days to take action in their Paparazzi business?

Michelle:  Okay.  I want you all to make a Chicken List.  And what is a Chicken list?  It’s a list of those people you know that would be amazing at this business.  Whether it be as a team member, a hostess, a customer or even someone who you know would give you great referrals but for one reason or another, you are scared to talk to them.

You are scared to talk to them.  You are scared to ask them.  You are scared to tell them about this opportunity.  So my challenge to you is to make that list and I want you to call them.  Approach them.  Message them.  Call them preferably.  That way, they can hear your excitement and your passion for your business.  There is a reason these people stand out to you and you need to go with your gut on it.

Let me tell you a little about Lisa before we jump into her training for us.  Lisa is the other of 4 boys and they are age ranges from 6-15.  She has been in Paparazzi for 5 years.  She started the very last day of September in 2011.

Lisa is married and they live over in Virginia.  Now her hubby is able to work from home so that frees up their schedule.  He was able to do that in March of last year.

Lisa has a background of working in a hospital lab.  She did that for a couple of years.

When her oldest started kindergarten, she started to stay home with her kids and started her own video editing business.  She did that for 7 years.  That’s where she gets her awesome graphic design skills and graphic design skills that you’ll see on her website.

Lisa is an Executive Producer with Paparazzi.  She has reached Crown Club 25 and she is Life of the Party with Bronze access.

Lisa is also the brains behind the website HotsyTotsy.com.  And she says to be sure to keep an eye out on that because she has big plans and there’s some amazing things coming to that website very soon.

Lisa, did I miss anything?

Lisa: I think that’s most of it.

Awnya: Awesome.  Awesome.  Well, let’s jump into the very first question.

What got you started with Paparazzi?

Lisa.  This is kind of interesting I think.  My video business was going and then we moved over here to Virginia. I had a baby and I took a year off my video business because I didn’t know anybody.

Then I was ready to start like posting adds on Craigslist to start making video montages again.  My sister called me literally the night before, because I had plans, she called me the night before and she said, “I have to tell you about this thing.  I just went to this jewelry party and it’s called Paparazzi and everything was $5.”

She lives in Utah where it kinda mostly started.  So she told me all about it and for some reason I do everything she tells me, because she’s my older sister, so she’s like, “You should sign up.” so I went online to do a little research.

There wasn’t much to see but I found out kinda what it was and I was really excited and so the next day I called my future sponsor girl, you know, she went and got her name for me.  She was actually doing an event.  She couldn’t talk to me and I told her I wanted to talk to her right now because I wanted to sing up so badly and so she took off from her event and had somebody help her out.

That’s how I signed up and I am really an entrepreneur at heart and so any kind of business challenge is super-duper interesting.  And so that’s why I wanted to do it.  I didn’t even know it was all $5 really.  I didn’t know all the earrings came for free with a necklaces until I opened my packages.  I was a pretty big surprise and I loved it.

Awnya: Your sister told you to join and you joined.  I love that.  I don’t know anybody else who has that same story.  That’s great.

What is your Paparazzi why?

Lisa:  First I did it to be challenged.  Cuz, I don’t know. It’s kinda like, my sponsor did it and she was this girl who was like 10 years younger than me.  And I was like, “Well, I can do that.  You know, I have all this life experience and I’ve been through college already and I know more people probably.”  So it was kind of a challenge to see if I could be as successful as her.  That’s why I first started.

And then I learned more about the creativity part because Paparazzi doesn’t have very many rules, which I love.  And because of that, I’ve been able to come up with ideas and solve problems because they are not telling me every single little thing to do.

For me, that’s really liberating and for me, it gives me a purpose beyond just cleaning my house and watching my kids.  You know what I mean?

Awnya: Oh, totally.  And as a mom, and a stay at home mom, you need that creative outlet and adult conversations.

Now, have you noticed that your why has changed from when you first started to now, where you’re an Elite leader.

Lisa:  A little bit, yeah.  At first, it was about me, you know.  “I wanna hit these goals.  I wanna see if I can do it.”  It was like that. But now…my personal goal, when I heard about Leadership Summit, was to get to Leadership Summit.

And so last year I was able to go.  I hit Executive producer a year and a half ago and I got to go to Leadership.  It was amazing and I loved it.  So it’s not like I dreamed to be a Maven A-lister although that would be great.

But my goal now is to like help other people get there because, for me, that was like the crowning achievement was to get spoiled at Leadership.  So I really, really want other people to go.

And so, I have my first team member, Dawn Ortiz and she gets to go to Leadership this year. So she’s the first one in my downline who gets to go and I’m so excited to see her hit that huge, huge goal cuz I know that was a big one for her.

That’s kinda what it is at this point.  I’m trying to figure out how to teach other people how to progress and not just sell jewelry every day.  So yeah, it’s changed a little, but I still do it in the same way.  I like to be creative and stuff.

I love that you want to help more people get to the Elite Leadership Summit because they really do spoil you guys and that is such a really cool goal.  Not just to make a ton of money but to help other people.

So we are going to take a little bit of a shift here to your worst Paparazzi moment.

So draw us a picture take us to that moment in time that was your Worst Moment with Paparazzi.

Lisa:  This is a fun story to tell.  This was right when I started because I didn’t know what I was doing.  You know what, it doesn’t even matter if I knew what I was doing.  It’s just that I saw a lot of potential in this business.

So what it was is when I sighed up, I live in Virginia and I’m about 1 hour and a half from Washington DC.  And so between me and Washington DC there are like the richest houses in the whole country because you have all these executive homes.

So when I signed up, I thought, “Okay!” and I was the ninth person in the state to sign up.  So I was like, “I’m gonna kill it!  I’m gonna get all of northern Virginia under me.”  That was my plan.

So then I went to my friend who was a marketer.  And she said a job fair would be the very best place to find people.  And so I’m like, “Rock on, this is what I’m gonna do”.  I went and found a job fair right in the middle of Washington DC and signed up to sell jewelry at it and to present my business.

It was very expensive.  I think it was $800.  So I went for it.  I signed up for that thing and I was ready to go to DC.  So the day before I was supposed to go I realized that it was DC and I’m not going there alone and I’m not driving in the traffic alone cuz its scary.

So I paid a teenager friend $100 so that she could help me.  That wasn’t a huge mistake. That was fun getting to know her and having her support.  So she came with me.  So then it was $900 is what my point is.  So then we drive to DC.

And the place was like right downtown and we drove around the block probably 7 or 8 times because I couldn’t get into the other lane to get into the hotel and drop off all my stuff.  Anyway we finally did.  It was very scary.  I got in there.

Oh!   Oh I didn’t tell you the other part.  Also the day before they called me and they said, “We just realized you were going to sell your jewelry there and you’re not allowed to sell products at our job fair.  Do you still want to go?”

  So after thinking for just a couple of minutes I’m like, “Yeah.  Yes I do.” because I had in mind that this job fair was going to kill it.  So I went to an event where you can’t even sell stuff and I paid $900 which was insane.

So I didn’t regret it yet.  I went in there and presented and had those drawing slips.  People filled them out and by the end of the day I have 35 people who wanted to sign up for Paparazzi.  Cool right?!

So these 35 people, I get home and I start calling them all.  Every single one of them I leave messages.  Pretty much nobody’s home.  I leave messages, I call the next day.  I’m super excited.  And then I started to actually talk to them.  And I didn’t know this, but I’m telling you guys not to make the same mistake.

Every single one of those people needed a job like today. They needed a McDonald’s job.  They needed cash.  They didn’t need a business opportunity.  It was absolutely the wrong audience.

I felt defeated and I don’t know.  “$900 really?!”  That was more than my kit.  I got the $750 kit at that time.  It kind of kicked my butt and I was very bugged.   But I had signed up for 9 other events.  I signed up for 10 events the day after I signed up for Paparazzi so I was obligated and committed to go to those other 9 events.

So I just kinda brushed it off my shoulders and did everything else anyway and pretended that never happened and moved forward.

What is the lesson you want us to learn from that?

So I kinda learned a little bit of a lesson from that.

And that is, it can get kinda crappy.  You can lose a lot of money but I feel like I planted a seed there because nobody in Virginia had heard of Paparazzi.  Nobody.  And so at least people started knowing what it was.

And because I was active and because I was doing all my stuff, I got quite a few signups from the Zip code finder where people could call Paparazzi and find out who was active in our area and I was the only one and so I had maybe 10 different people in the next couple of months who signed up from adjacent areas to where I live.

So it did pay off.  I didn’t know that it would.  I just kinda thought that one event can’t control the future of my business.  That would be silly.  That’s my lesson that I learned.

Awnya:  I’m gonna highlight a couple other things that you said in there that I loved.  So you said to keep pushing through, even when you have those bad events, spend $900 to get nothing.  You just keep pushing through.

And then the second thing that you said was to be active so that people can find you in the consultant search and that’s a great way to find new people in your area and to build your team, right?!

Lisa:  Yeah, I’ve never been inactive.  I can’t even imagine that.  I don’t think I would be serious about my business if I let that slide.

Awnya: And it’s really not that hard to get 25 pieces a month.  Just join the Fashion Fix and you’ve got that taken care of, right?!

Lisa:  Yeah.  That wasn’t always available so I have had some days before where, you know, the time was getting close but I… actually, just a couple of times, so thank goodness for the fashion fix now.

Awnya: Let’s keep moving right along.

What is a habit you feel contributes to your success?

Lisa:  A habit I have would be, I kinda mentioned it when I talked a second ago.  I obligate myself to something so that I cannot let anybody down.

So I’ll sign up for events 6 months away and then I know I’ll be active in Paparazzi clear through that.  It just keeps the ball rolling.  So I try to sign up for events far away.

Another thing that I do that’s an obligation is that I’ll promise my team something.  Like right now, we are doing a contest where we are getting no’s.  Go for No like they taught at Empower Me Pink.

 And so there’s a contest where our team has to get 30 no’s a week for 2 weeks.  And I put myself in a group with my birthday because we grouped by birthdays. And so I have to do it too.  And so I’m trying to figure out ways that I can do the same thing that they are doing.  I’m trying to get my 30 no’s.

And by obligating myself to that, and I’ve promised prizes and I’ve promised an end date, it just kinda keeps me from being lazy about it and from slacking a little bit.  And I don’t always have a contest going but I try to keep them kind of consistent every month or two so that everybody stays kind of on their toes.

Awnya:  Planning for the future.  Planning for events in the future, planning for your team in the future.  You’re not going day to day or week to week or month to month. You’re looking forwards into the future for your business and for your team, right?

Lisa:  Yeah, it’s smart to do the day to day stuff so you don’t get overwhelmed, but obligating is something.  It works.  It totally works.  I don’t know why I do that or how I figured it out, but it’s kind of my system now and so I’m just gonna do that forever cuz it works for me.

What advice would you give to a brand new Paparazzi consultant just barely getting started in their business?

Lisa:  I would say consistency.  I am not consistent.  I’m a really big procrastinator and sometimes when I finish a project, I’m like, “why wasn’t I doing this every day?” you know?!

In fact, there’s this trick I’ve learned and I haven’t even watched anything about it, I just found out it exists.  It’s called the 90 second rule.  And what it is, it’s called the 90 second rule.  And what it is, is if you have something to do, let’s say you need to clean up the kitchen table after breakfast from your kids.  If you take 90 seconds and put all their dishes in the dishwasher and wash them off, its gonna take you 90 seconds to do it.

If you wait until later, then you have to like soak the dishes, scrub all the stuff off and its gonna take you way, way longer than the 90 seconds it would have taken before.  With consistency, you can totally apply that.

Let’s say for example, you have new jewelry that just came in.  It will just take you a few minutes to go to your website, pull up the pictures and post them on Facebook.  If you wait till later, you may have sold 1/2 of your stuff and then you have to figure out what’s missing and you have to make sure you have everything labeled correctly.

And so consistency and doing small tasks daily.  Seriously, I bet you I would be way higher now if I had been more consistent. I’ve been working on it and so it’s something that I’ve improved, but I would suggest to everybody that they be consistent.

And the other thing about consistency is that your customers are going to see you as something reliable.  Like I know I can go to Walmart today, they’re going to have the stuff I want because they consistently carry their products and stuff.

 And so I’ve been working on consistency with my LIVE sales.  And so my customers, like I do it every single Thursday nights.  And so now my customers know where to find me and where to look for me and it’s cool.

So sometimes if I’m like 2 or 3 minutes late, I have people messaging me, “Where are you?  Why haven’t you started?”  which is great.  It makes you feel pretty good and then you’re able to sell more, of course.  That’s it.  I would say consistency could carry your whole entire business if you do it.

Awnya:  The 90 second rule.  I haven’t heard of that before but I love that! and I’m gonna have to start doing it.  Cuz as we’re speaking, my kids oatmeal bowls from this morning are sitting, drying in my sink and you’re right!  It’s gonna take me so much longer to do those dishes because I didn’t do it the first time.

What is 1 thing you would suggest to a consultant who is feeling stuck in their Paparazzi business.  What would you tell them to do to get things energized again.

Lisa:  You know what?!  This is what I do for my backup.  I call it my backup plan.  Almost anybody on the planet will do fundraiser stuff in one fashion or another.  What I’ve noticed about people, they do not do for themselves, but they’ll do for other people.

In fact, when I have girls trying to hit rank, I tell them to ask their friends if they want to help them hit an rank by buying their jewelry or by ordering or whatever.  Because people will do for other people before themselves.  So with a fundraiser, there’s 2 different ideas.

One is, like let’s say you can’t find any events or let’s say an event got canceled and you need something last minute.  You can often find a local fundraiser that’s already happening and be a part of it.  You can go in and have a table because if you are willing to donate part of your profit, everybody wins.  It’s not going to hurt them or you.  So you can usually get into an event last minute.

Whether it’s a booth or a quarter auction, they have those a lot around here, or something where you donate and raffle off prizes.  Because then you can go there and meet people and network.  So fundraisers and a super, super good backup plan.

The other thing you can do with a fundraiser is, do a live party as a fundraiser.  And this is really interesting.  So I only started doing live parties in…maybe the end of October.

And I decided for New Year’s Eve, I wanted my boys to do something.  For Christmas, we didn’t do an angels tree or a Sub for Santa or anything like that.  And I didn’t want to miss out on the opportunity and so we decided to do a fundraiser with the boys and have them sell the jewelry in front of the camera.

We did that.  We set that up for New Years Eve cuz I know a lot of moms would be sitting home anyways. We did okay.  They lasted about 15 minutes and then my husband took over and did it for about 30 minutes and then the phone died.

And so I picked up where they left of the next day and did a live party for like a long time.  Three or 4 hours.  And what I ended up doing is, we picked the Make a Wish foundation and I labeled my live video with that.  “Make a wish fundraiser.”  I donated all the profits because that’s kinda what I wanted my kids to do anyways.  So I wrote this.  “Make a Wish foundation fundraiser.  All profits donated.”  That was my biggest sale I’ve ever had.

It was so cool because I had a lot of people curious because it was not just for me to make money.  And I know that why we’re here, to make money, but you’re gonna learn really fast, it’s not just about that.  And so I was able to sell a whole bunch of jewelry, get rid of a bunch of my stock that I’m tired of and it was just a really good booth.

And from that point it made me pretty motivated to start doing them every Thursday night.  And I have made some customers from that sale that I wouldn’t have made before because they bought to help the Make a Wish fundraiser, not really because they loved jewelry.  That would be my advice.  Just look in the fundraiser arena until you get things going again.

Awnya:  Well, and even thought you didn’t MAKE a ton of money with that, like you said, you cleared out some of your old inventory so then you’re able to buy new things.  So then it’s a win, win for everybody involved.

What is a quote that inspires you?

Lisa:  So I’ve thought about this and I like quotes but I couldn’t think of one from somebody else.  And so I made up one when I first started and I think this is 100% true.  Now it’s not inspiring as far as like motivational, but it is as far as having this business.

It is really, truly like we’ve won the lottery.  And so if you work super hard, your payout is going to be bigger.  And it’s kinda ringing true for me now because I have a consistent paycheck from my team.  Looking back, I couldn’t have imagined having a big paycheck but it’s the coolest thing ever!

Like, we just redid our kitchen.  We’ve been putting that off forever because nobody ever has extra money.  And so we were able to do that and it’s because I kinda look at this business that way, you know.  If I don’t get a big paycheck it’s kinda my fault because I’m not working hard enough.

Awnya:  Oh, that totally makes sense.  It might not be a quote from Vincent Van Gough or something, but it is totally perfect.

Last question.

Here on the PapaRockStars podcast, we like to do a weekly call challenge.  So

What is 1 thing you would challenge the listeners to do in the next 7 days to take action in their Paparazzi business?

Lisa:  Going back to what we were talking about, there’s 2 parts to this…

I would say why don’t you jump on the challenge to my 30 no’s in a week.  And that way that works in you need to ask people about their business.  Like you need to straight up got to their face and say,  “You know what?  You know I sell jewelry.  I’ve never asked you.  Is this something you want to be a part of?” or you could say, “Are you interested in buying some of my stuff?”  You know, whatever you want to ask them.

And what you’re doing is, you are going for 30 no’s in 1 week so you can split it up however you want.  In the no’s you’re going to get yesses, obviously. So you’re going to find party bookings, you’re going to find interested recruits and you’re gonna make more jewelry sales.  So I would challenge you to do the 30 no’s in 1 week.

The other half of that is the consistency thing.  So make a goal to make this 30 no’s challenge consistent.  Like maybe you need to make sure you’re running 1 errand everyday so you can talk to 2 or 3 people.  And that will get some of your no’s done.  Or make sure that you block out a time each day like from 10-11 and make a ton of phone calls.

Do something consistent.  Don’t put it off till the end of the week and maybe you’ll also, in doing that, you’ll find something that works well so that you can just start doing that for the rest of your life and start doing that for your business.

Awnya:  So 30 no’s.  And a “maybe” or a “not right now” does not count as a “no”, right Lisa?

Lisa:  Right!  Yeah.  It has to be a straight up “no”.  “No no no”.

Awnya: So I’ve done these challenges before and it gets to the point where when someone says “yes”, you kinda get disappointed.  It flips is on its head a little bit.  So don’t get discouraged.  You’ll get your 30 no’s, you just have to push thought a little bit.

Lisa: Yeah, yeah exactly.  My plan, I’ll tell you really quick.   I’m going to call the retirement centers and the hospitals where I live.   I’ve been wanting to do that since I started.  And then the other one is, I’m finally going to try to do a bingo party in person.  And so I’m just going to message my customers directly and just say “I’m doing a bingo party will you come?”  And then there we go.  So hopefully I’ll get my 30 no’s pretty fast, but it’s a good plan because these are things that I’ve been putting off for forever.

Awnya: And now your forced to do it cuz you’re like, “Man I need my 30 no’s” and your team is counting on you and so now you just gotta do it, right?!

List: Unfortunately yes, but I will be so glad.

Today’s special Elite Leader Interview is with Angela Small.  Angela is one of the top Paparazzi Jewelry consultants.  She is an awesome team leader and mother and she has some great information to share with us today on the Papa Rock Stars Podcast.

Today I am excited to welcome to the show Angela Small.   Angela is a fashionista with Paparazzi Accessories.  That is an Elite Rank.  She has achieved Crown Club 10 and Life of the Party Bronze.  Angela is the leader of Angela’s Angels with nearly 900 consultants under her.

She does Paparazzi full time.  It’s her only Full time job and her love.  Angela lives in Maine with her husband of 10 years and her 7 year old little boy.  Now, if you were in the Dominican Republic with us or if you’ve seen pictures, you will see her whole family there with her.

I actually got to take a snorkeling excursion with her and her little boy and it was so fun to watch him splashing around in the water.  She says he is now addicted to snorkeling thanks to Trent Kirby.

Her ultimate goal with Paparazzi is to retire her husband so that they can be free to live the life that they want to live and so he doesn’t have to punch the clock.

Angela, Did I leave anything out?

Angela: You didn’t!  Thank you so much for having me!  I have my own channel?  My own like extension?  Slash Angela?  I feel so special.

Awnya:  Of course, of course!  We have to highlight you!!

Angela:  Wow!

Awnya:  Well, let’s jump right in!

What got you started with Paparazzi?

Angela:  Well, for about 10 years or so I was working at a job where I was very unhappy.  I was going pretty much nowhere in the company.  I worked for the government.  Each day I got out at 4:30 and my son’s daycare closed at 5:30 leaving me very little time to get there.

And one day, stuck in traffic and construction, I had to go the bathroom.  My gas tank was on empty and it was very apparent that I was going to be getting him late.

I showed up at his school and there he was outside, alone with his teacher.  Waiting for me.  The last kid there.  And seeing him there, standing there waiting for me, with me all flustered, I had said, “This is enough.  I’m tired of this.  I’m tired of living my life around a job I hate.”

I was just tired of missing out on so much of his life just to be a slave to the corporate world.  I was gone for 11 or 12 hours every single day for what??  You know?!   I knew something needed to happen.

We couldn’t afford to miss out on my paycheck but I really couldn’t continue to live like that.  That moment, I said, I’m done.  Money has a way of coming around again but time doesn’t.

A few months later without any kind of safety net, without any backup plan, without any support from anybody- including my husband- I quit my job.  So long story short, money was running out, time was running out.  I needed to find a job fast and that’s kinda when I found Paparazzi.

Even though I hate Direct Sales, I can’t stand them.  I don’t like buying things I don’t need and can’t afford.  I saw my former co-worker, Christy, having a Facebook sale, a Facebook party for Paparazzi and somehow this beautiful pink necklace “All the Trimmings” popped up in my newsfeed.  I bought the necklace that day and I signed up to sell that night.

 I didn’t have the money, I used Paypal line of credit to finance the $299 kit.  I paid off that kit with my profits within a week.  I was promoted to Director in a couple of months.  I promoted to Producer in less than a year.  I had more than 200 team mates in my first year.  And now 2 1/2 years later, I have a team of, I think, around 900.  And it has completely changed out life.

We’ve traveled the world.  I make triple what I used to make working for the government and I am literally happier than I have ever been.  I don’t miss out on any part of my sons youth.  We live and enjoy our life how, when and where we please and it’s all because of $5 jewelry.  It’s pretty amazing!

That’s my story!

Awnya:  That’s very similar to my story!   I was working graveyards at McDonalds and I missed my son rolling over for the first time.  It was pre-Paparazzi.

You hit that point where you are like, “Something has got to give.  Because I’m tired of missing out on my children’s lives.  I’m tired of missing out on things that I can’t get back.”

You know, you can always see a movie later or go out with your girlfriends later, but missing those important moments in your child’s life, you can’t ever get those back, right?!

Angela: No. No, and my other feeling was this- when I wasn’t at work, I felt like I was always stressed because when I was home, I was trying to get done everything I couldn’t do during the week.  I just kinda felt like, after all the money you pay in daycare and gas and tolls and the time from sunup, the time you leave your house till the time you get home, you’re just working, working, working.

And the time you are home, its being spent catching up on the un-fun things like housework and cooking and all of that.  I just didn’t feel like I was enjoying my life.  I would rather be broke than not enjoying my life.

And thankfully now, I’m never broke and I love my life more than ever.

Awnya:   So powerful.  Okay, so let’s jump into the next question.

What is your Paparazzi why?  Why do you do Paparazzi?

Angela: It gives me a purpose, you know.  I feel like I am so much more than just a wife or just a mother.  I am like, now, I am a leader. I am a friend.  And I have found true joy.  All while contributing financially to our family.  I would say that I do it all for my family, but I don’t really.  I do it all for them and for my own happiness.  I feel like it’s really rounded out my life.

Awnya:  Now, has your why changed a little bit from when you first started Paparazzi till now?

Angela: Yea, my original why was that I  simply just needed more money.  I needed money for my family and it’s turned into far more than that.  As you know, being in the family that we are in, cuz you and I are sisters too.  We’re Papa-sisters!

I don’t have a sister, but you know.  But now, I have them all over the country and I’m traveling all over the world to see them and I have a sense of pride that I’ve never experienced before.

I mean, it’s true!  It’s so much more than the money.  It’s so much more than jewelry.

Awnya:  There’s so much that Paparazzi has to give us besides a little bit of money on the side.  Like the sisterhood that you were talking about.  The feeling of accomplishment.  I love the recognition, I mean, I wish somebody was standing there after I finished loading the dishwasher and was like, “Good job!  Way to go!  Here’s a certificate!”

Being a mom, being a housewife, it’s kind of a thankless job.  So that’s one of the many other things that I love. You get that recognition. You get that pat on the back from your leaders.

Angela:  My husband, you know, he is an amazing, hard worker.  He has been working at his job for 25 plus years in management.  And he literally works 5-6 days a week, all day long.  Puts in overtime.  Weekends, evenings, holidays, the whole 9.  And he’s never gotten a thank you gift in the mail.  He’s never gotten a Christmas bonus.

He works way harder than I ever do and I feel like I am constantly showered in praise and thanks and love.  And it’s really awesome.  And I don’t think anybody outside of our little Paparazzi world can truly understand how wonderful it is.

Awnya:  I completely agree.  We’re gonna take a little bit of a shift, a little bit of a change here because we want to talk about your worst Paparazzi moment. Now, we’re not bashing on Paparazzi because if you guys can’t tell, we have passion for Paparazzi. We love it with all our hearts.

But everybody has that moment where you feel like giving up.  Where you feel like the whole world is against you.  Where you are just the lowest of the low and this question is designed to let everybody else in Paparazzi know that even those Elite leaders, the ones that are the highest ranking in Paparazzi, have had those bad moments too.  So Angela,

Take us to that moment in time that was your worst Paparazzi moment.

Angela:  Even the best jobs have the worst days, you know.  I mean, yeah.  I get it.  Actually, my worst Paparazzi moment was fairly recently actually.  I always encourage my team to go outside their comfort zone and I did and I went live on my personal page.  And I had friends and I had teammates watching and I didn’t sell a darn thing.  I was discouraged but more than anything, I was so embarrassed.

What did you learn from that?

Awnya:  What was the take-away?

Angela:  The takeaway is, if you aren’t successful in something, whether it be in business or in life, look at the situation and figure out what it is you are doing wrong and watch people who do it better than you.  I tried to evaluate in that situation, why I was not successful.  And what I realized was that I did not have a lot of enthusiasm for each pieces.  In addition, I did not build up the party.  I did not plan ahead, I did not advertise it.  It was pretty much just an on a whim thing.

I did not build up momentum in the party either.  I did not display my products well and I did not showcase each piece as they deserved.  And the worst thing that I did not do was that I did not interact with people in the comments.  There were people popping in and saying, “Hi!” but I was too busy talking to myself that I didn’t talk to them.

Thankfully, when I went to Empower Me Pink, I learned so much! I took notes, not only for my team, but for myself, which I will be applying to my next live event, which I am slowly working up the courage to do again.

Awnya:  I love that you say that.  You are working up the courage to try again.  Cuz you’re not just going to quit.  You’re not just going to say, “This live video is for other people.  It’s not for me.  You’re ready to go at it again.

Angela:  Absolutely!  I learn from my mistakes!  And I’ve also been studying people who have wild success.  I have people on my team who sell 95% of what they show.  I give great advice and I’m now going to be taking my own advice and I’m a very strong believer in that.

Awnya: So for the Live videos –

  • Plan ahead
  • talk it up
  • get people excited just like you would with a home party
  • invite people ahead of time
  • Enthusiasm
  • showcase each piece and make it look good


Angela:  Absolutely.  Describe each pieces’ qualities, you know.  I did a live video, I’m really big into live with my own team in my own private group, and I was showing off this pieces.  Long story short, I have this belt that I bought in the Dominican and I wear it as a necklace and as a hairpiece.  And one of my girls kinda said that she didn’t like it and she was kinda picking on me, which was fine.  And I said, “Okay, well,” and I held up the necklace and I said, “Here’s the necklace and it’s $5.  Made of shells…multiple colors.  $5.” and then go onto the next.  “Does that sound good?  Or how does this sound?”

“Look at this piece.  It is a necklace, it is a belt, and it is a hair-tie.”  And then tie it in your hair. “It’s made of shells.  Check out the detail on these shells.  Handmade in the Dominican Republic.  It’s got colors.  It’s got purple.  It’s got blue, beige and it think there’s some green in here.  I have only one of these folks, if you want it say SOLD”.

Even if I thought it was hideous, which it very well could have, I never lied about the product.  I never said it was absolutely amazing.  You don’t have to lie.  But showcase a pieces’ best quality.

Awnya:  Something that I’ve been doing to prepare for my live videos next, and you’re going to  think that this is so dumb.  I’ve been watching QVC.  Instead of Netflix binge-watching when I’m doing laundry or whatever, I put on QVC, not to buy things, but to listen to their descriptions.

QVC, they have been selling for years!  People buy like crazy on there, and there’s a reason.  There’s a formula that they use on there.  So if you want to research for your live videos, the listeners, go ahead, tune into QVC, tune into the jewelry gem network or whatever it is.  See how they describe things.  See how they talk about things. See how they pull you in.

Like, they were describing this jacket and it was like this horse-hair… honestly it was kinda ugly in my opinion.   But in the middle of it, they have this girl modeling and they said to her, “How’s your baby doing?” and then they tell everyone, “She just had a baby 2 months ago.  Doesn’t she look fabulous?!  This looks so good on her because it can hide those flaws.  It can hide the post-mommy belly.”

Number one, they are pulling in that personality, they are describing the product and afterwards I was like “I have 7 kids. I need that ugly horse-hair thingy for $250!” and then you can evaluate and you’re saying “Wait.  When I first tuned in, I did not like this at all but by the end, they had me wanting to pull out my credit card and spend $250!”

Angela:  It’s crazy that you say this cuz there’s a girl on my team who I said in that same exact live video, this girl she’ll work for QVC because she could sell ocean-front property to someone up in Minnesota.

Awnya: But it’s true!  I mean, there are other consultants who do great live videos with Paparazzi.  So, if you’re nervous, do some research before you jump into it, because live videos are the future if you do them right.

Let’s jump into the next question.

What is a habit you have that contributes to your success?

Angela: Most of all, I’m extremely personable with my customers and my team.  I’m very human, I’m very vulnerable.  I think the word that best describes me is transparent.  And I think that my customers and my team mates very much appreciate that about me.  So they feel that they can come to me with anything they might need.

I feel like positivity is extremely important.  Sometimes we think that if we are too positive that you become un-relatable.  Like, “I can’t come to Angela with a problem because she is going to downplay it.” and what-not. I feel like people can come to me with issues they are having and the way that I handle it makes them feel much more uplifted but realistic, if that makes sense.

Awnya: Absolutely.  Being approachable, being real.  People buy into YOU when they join your team, when they’re buying jewelry from you.  They’re buying into you, so they need to trust you.  They need to like you.  Being transparent, that totally makes sense.

Angela:  That’s why I love your question about “What was your worst moment?” because people need to understand that Elite representatives do have bad parties.  We do have bad months.  We do struggle.  And I think it’s really important that they know that.  But on the flip side that we learn from that and that we grow.

So I think that my habit is that I really make a huge habit of offering great customer service not only to my customers but to my teammates who are, in my opinion, the ultimate customers.

What advice would you give to a brand new Paparazzi consultant just getting started in their business?

Angela:  Use your resources.  There’s a lot of information in your back office and through your upline and on YouTube and on Pinterest.  It’s easy to get overwhelmed with all the information.  Don’t feel like you have to know everything right now, but never stop learning and growing and adding to your shopping group.

 Never stop partying.  Never get discouraged.  If you feel that you’ve run out of parties, don’t say, “I’ve run out of parties.” and just give up. Talk to people who are maybe good at what you are not good at.  Play on other people’s strengths.

Awnya:  I love what you said there.  “Never stop growing.  Never stop partying.”

If you could suggest 1 thing to a consultant who is feeling stuck in their business, what would it be?

Angela:  Play on your own strengths and if you have a weakness in a certain area, learn from the best.  Kinda like I was saying earlier with Live.  I did not have a good live party at all and I’ve been watching people who are amazing at it and I went to EMP where they had awesome training on it and I’m taking that and I’m running with it.

Another thing is to rub elbows with those that you want to learn from.  So if you know that somebody has great success with something, watch them and take notes and duplicate what works.  Also, never stop showing your love and your passion for the jewelry.  Talk to everyone about the opportunity.

But most importantly, and literally, it is the most important thing ever, is to be positive.  Even if you are not feeling positive because just as negativity is contagious, so is positivity.   It’s very courageous.  And if you truly show that you are a part of what it is that you do, then others will to.

Awnya:  I’m just going to re-cap what you said there, cuz there was so much good in there.  You said to:

  • play on your strengths
  • learn from the best
  • rub elbows with the best, the people that are better than you
  • Show your love and your passion for the product, that’s contagious
  • And also being positive which is also contagious.

Angela:  Right, totally.  If you show that you really love what you do, others will too. They’ll want to be a part of it.  It’s hard sometimes when we are feeling negative and we’re feeling down. It’s hard to break out of that rut.  And when you show your happy attitude and you show your love and you show your commitment to your product and your team and your work, people will want to be a part of that.

They’re not going to show love and they’re not going to show interest if you are “ho-hum, woh-is-me.”  So it’s really important that no matter how you feel, even on Facebook, just type something encouraging and remind yourself what it is that you are typing.  Fake it till you make it!

Awnya: So I have a little analogy that I thought of as you were saying that. Think of yourself as a magnet.  So on a magnet, there is 2 sides, right.  A positive side, and a negative and either side is attracting.

 So if you are being the positive magnet, you are going to be attracting the positive things to you.  If you are being that negative side, you are going to attract those.  But here’s the thing, if you are being the negative, the positive does not come.  Does that make sense?!  You know when you are trying to push the magnet together…

Angela:  It pushes away!

Awnya: Yeah, that actual resistance.  So if you are wanting your business to grow, which all of us should be wanting our business to grow.  If you are trying to attractive that positivity but you are in a bad space and you are being negative or you are just feeling down, you’re not going to be attracting those go-getters, those people that are wanting to grow their business.

You’re going to be attracting more negative.  So if you want that positive, if you want that growth, you need to make a switch in your life and be positive.  Whether you are faking it till you make it or whether you find something make that shift.  Order more jewelry.  Talk to your leader.  Get on a call and say “I’m really struggling with this, help me out…”

But you’ve gotta make that switch so that you are attracting instead of pushing that stuff away.  Does that analogy make sense?

Angela:  It’s absolutely perfect.  You know, Trent said something at EMP that was incredibly powerful.  He said, “You become like the 5 people you spend the most time with.”  And if those people are negative and they are soul-suckers, and whatever- insert negative adjective here- that’s what you are going to be like.  And if you are like that, that’s the kind of person you are going to attract.  So it is very, very important, that you hang out with, especially in the Paparazzi world, the people that you want to become.

What is a quote that inspires you?

Angela:  I have 2 quotes that I love.  1 of which is,


You are always going to have detours in life but the destination should always remain the same.  So that’s one that I like.  But,

Awnya:  That brings new perspective into anything.  If you think of what you are doing as a calling instead of a job or instead of just something that you do, it brings new clarity, new definition to it.

I haven’t heard that one before so that’s a neat quote!

Angela: Do something in this business that scares you.  Maybe you are terrified to go live, you know.  Maybe the thought of approaching a stranger with your business card horrifies you.  Maybe calling a team mate who hasn’t been active in several months intimidates you.

Maybe you are totally afraid to approach that person that you think would be awesome about selling. Maybe you are afraid to approach them about joining your team.  The magic happens when you go outside of your comfort zone, so my challenge to you this week is to go there.

I am more than excited to announce my co-host for today, Miss Marilyn.  She is one of the most energetic and loving people that you will ever meet in Paparazzi and you are in for a treat today with her interview.

She is Crown Club 10 member.  She has a team of Blessed Bombshells that has 666 team members, as of this recording.  She is WAY anxious to get past the number 666 but it will happen.  Miss Marilyn has won Rock the Runway 2 times and Zi Boutique Blitz 2 times.  (this is something that Paparazzi has phased out, but basically she got to go shopping the Zi boutique at convention before anyone else.)

She hit Directory her 1st month, and Producer her 3rd month, and then in her 4th month she won a free trip to the Caribbean. She was on fire, she is currently on fire.  She just goes nuts with Paparazzi.

Now, one of the cool things with Paparazzi and something that is near and dear to my heart is the necklace, The Marilyn.  It is one of the honors bestowed on the Paparazzi Rock the Runway models in 2015.  Marilyn has a necklace named after her.  I’m sure you’ll see a lot of people sporting “The Marilyn” at convention, but it was only available at convention last year.  It’s locked up.  It’s in the vault, but I’m sure you’ll see it because it was a popular necklace.

Miss Marilyn is one of the newest Elite leaders.  She hit Elite in February 2016.  The thing that is super neat to me and is so inspiring is, number one, it was February.  There is only 28 days in February. February is THE hardest month to rank, any rank.  Miss Marilyn and the Bombshells DOUBLE ranked in February.  They went from Producer to Executive Producer – they double ranked, Miss Marilyn actually even knows the day and time – you want to know this?  February 25th at 5pm.  And then the team went on to exceed what they needed for Elite by a lot.

Miss Marilyn thought it was kind of a fluke, even though she got the rank, but they did it again in March and they have been on fire ever since.

Did I leave anything out?

Marilyn:  That was fabulous!

Why did you get started with Paparazzi? 

Marilyn: I did not mean to start with Paparazzi.  It was all a big accident.  So I had no intention of being in Direct Sales or any of it because I hated Network Marketing.  I had a store, which is a much longer story, and I was looking for something to sell because we were thousands and thousands and thousands of dollars in debt and my oldest son was missing and my car was broken down.  My little boy was crying about 2 hours a day, screaming and hitting the floor and kicking his legs.  Life was in shambles.  I had $300 left and to be honest with you I was gonna kill myself that night.

And then I found this jewelry that had a tag. I realize that this sounds completely insane now that I know all you sane people.  I know that people like think about things and stuff and they like do research and don’t just go, “Oh, I like the tag.  It has a pink crown and it’s called Paparazzi. My favorite colors are pink and black, so I think I’ll order 100 pieces of jewelry with my last $300.”

Like that’s completely insane. I know that now. At the time it made perfect sense.  It was a leap of faith.  I know that it was the Holy Spirit guiding me. Then I literally would tell people to go away because I was not building a team.  There are girls, my personally sponsored that are still on the team, that will tell you that I told them to go away and that I wasn’t building a team.

So my team just kinda built its self.  I LOVED the jewelry.  I loved jewelry.  So then our founders and you, and all my other really close friends in Paparazzi just kinda loved me through it.  Every time I showed up everyone was happy to see me and really nice and I love the jewelry.

Everybody is so supportive and encouraging.  Then I finally got it.  I’ve always known that this is God’s plan but it kinda like didn’t make any sense because I hate direct sales. I hate network marketing.  The one thing I would never, ever, ever, ever, ever do in my entire life. I would never do direct sales.

Awnya: The thing that I love is you didn’t realize what you were getting into.  The pink crown is cute.  I love the crown on the tag.  I believe God places things in our lives for a reason and at the right time.  I think that he just knew that you needed this when you needed it and he put it right in your life, knowing that the pink crown would speak to you.  And it would be the answer to everything that you needed in your life.

Marilyn:  Isn’t it crazy?!  Crazy meaning like – “What a GREAT thing.  Go GOD!”  Paparazzi saved my life.  Direct sales.  The one thing I didn’t want to do.

What is your Paparazzi Why?

Marilyn:  For me, it has become, and my best friend said this, “This is a ministry.  And you love serving others.  You love doing acts of kindness.  You love helping other people.  That’s what this is!  It’s perfect for you!”  So I thought my why was to save my store, which is really my charity.  Save my charity, which it was and is.  But really, now it has evolved into, I LOVE serving others.  I love nothing more than going to Starbucks and sitting with the Bombshells.  I love just sitting and serving others and helping other people.  I believe that is what my why has turned into.   Its faith based leadership and faith based service.  And that truly is my why.

Although, I love the fact that I get to hang out with Maveric and travel and work from my phone.  Really my why is serving others and seeing the difference it makes in their lives.  You and I both know, there are bombshells whose lives have dramatically changed within 2 months, sometimes 1 month.

Or they’ve changed from being full of depression and anxiety.  Even things as heavy as that.  So to me, I believe that’s my calling now, and that’s why God put this in my life.  I always say, “It has nothing to do with the jewelry.” Of course, it stems from the jewelry but it has nothing to do with the jewelry.  It’s about serving others and changing people’s lives and creating a community.

Awnya: Can you all hear why I love Miss Marilyn so much??!  She is Elite.  She is one of the top 18 people in Paparazzi that is just KILLING it in her business and yet she is so humble and so generous and loving.  She is not sitting here being like, “Okay everybody.  You need to help me with this,” or, “I’m so awesome.”  She is about helping other people. It’s just inspiring.  It’s contagious.

I love Marilyn’s attitude towards life and towards service.  A couple weeks ago I did a call about not being pushy.  We talked about in that call how you have to have that shift in your attitude about talking to people about the jewelry and how you are pushing it on them because that’s not what we are doing with Paparazzi.

We’re sharing.  And it’s the same with the business opportunity.  You’re not pushing something on someone.  All you are doing is OFFERING it to them.  Marilyn totally exemplifies that in all that she does. In everything that she does is that service attitude and that helping people.  I just love that so much.

Marilyn: I love that word.  Offering.  Because that’s what I say.  I’m offering this to you.  Or I’m offering this jewelry to you.  It’s $5.

Awnya:  And that love.  I think people can feel that love.  They can feel that you don’t just want them in your team for numbers.  I mean, maybe other than the 666 to get to the 667, right?!

Marilyn: Right!  We need a 667.  The 666 makes me very uncomfortable.  I was telling Awnya before, when I had 66 personally sponsored I was like, “Auh!  Somebody sign up right now.  I don’t care.  Somebody sign up. I don’t even care if you want to do this business or not, we just need somebody to sign up.” I just do not like those numbers at all.

Awnya:  Let’s take a little bit of a shift. I know that you are a very positive person Miss Marilyn so this question might be a little bit difficult for you, but the reason I ask that is as consultants I think, especially not Elite consultants, people tend to get in their brains too much.  They think, “Oh the Elite, they’ve never had these problems.  They’ve never struggled. Everything has been smooth sailing, they just get there. They wave the magic wand and get to that Elite position.  They don’t know what it is to go through what I’m going through or to grind.”

So the reason that I like to go to this story of your worst Paparazzi moment is to show everybody, the Elite struggle too.  You guys have had your struggles.  You’ve had the worst moments, sometimes even worse than what I’ve had to deal with. You’ve struggled and pushed through and that’s why you are where you are today, because you get through those hard moments.  You don’t quit and you keep going.

So, Marilyn, draw us a picture, take us to that moment in time that was your worst moment in Paparazzi: 

Marilyn: Well, first, I love that you said that because it’s true, and especially right now.  I feel like that weighs really heavy on me.  All the new team members see right now is all the excitement and the fun and that I went to Leadership Summit and was treated like a movie star, spoiled rotten!  And then we will go to convention and I’ll get a crystal necklace and that’s what they are seeing, right?!

They weren’t here when my car didn’t work.  I went to convention my first year with no credit card and couldn’t get into my hotel room.  Even though we were doing great, I was still trying to save my shop, so I bought 3 pieces of the fall collection for $2.75 cuz that’s all I could afford and I was like crying at checkout cuz I couldn’t buy any jewelry.

Awnya: Three pieces?  Like one, two, three.  Three pieces, not thirty?

Marilyn:  Three pieces at 2.75.  Three pieces, that’s all that I got.  It’s been coming up lately because I feel like the new bombshells, when they struggle, they are like, “Well, you are Elite and you have no idea.” I’m like, “Oh honey. I’ve slept on the ground at the flea market.  It was 103 degrees”.

People forget that I had no one.  They see all the pictures now with 200 people in them, right?!  They don’t realize I had no friends, no family. Nobody when I started.  And I went to the flea market and slept on the ground to be around people.  Literally slept on the ground. Michelle Johnny remembers.  I would send her pictures.  She must have been horrified, right?!  I’m sleeping on the ground to get a spot at the flea market with my 4 year old.  It’s literally 103 degrees.

My car would break down, I don’t even know.  One day, Maveric, he’s starting to talk about it now, he’s like, “Do you remember we were at that event and the van, like the bottom of the van fell out and like we couldn’t get home?”

I just found a picture of him with his Handy Many tools trying to repair the car.  It was awful.  We just kept going.  My team always says, “Like Miss Marilyn says, ‘just keep going’.” And I say, “Just keep moving forward in Faith”.  I just didn’t let anything stop me.  Like anything.  I literally was locked out of my shop and it was being repossessed as I left for my first convention.

And nobody knows that.  I’ve never said that publicly, but some of my personally sponsored know.  I bought 3 pieces of jewelry.  I couldn’t afford to eat.  Any sane person wouldn’t have gone to their first convention, but I knew I had to be there and I went and did whatever it took.

So that, now, I remember getting to the desk and I couldn’t check in because I didn’t have a credit card or a debit card or anything.  And I literally could not check in to the hotel.  I remember looking down and seeing some of the Elite and going, “Oh, I should go ask them.  No, I would never.” I was mortified.

But my worst one, I had this little display thing that I had put together.  My first 15 minutes, wind came and the whole… remember I took my last $300, so I’m at the flea market with my last $300 and it’s 103 degrees.  The wind came and it blew it all over.  And everything went flying. All over.

This flea market, there’s thousands of people at the flea market, so probably 100 people were walking by.  For real.  Like this thick, dense group of people.  And this board falls over, the silver pegs go flying and jewelry goes flying all over.  And all over the people step back, like the Red Sea parting.  That’s like the vision I had in my mind after this.  And they all just stare at me and look at the ground and stare at the jewelry and no body helps me.  Every dime I have is laying all over the ground.  In that moment I could have picked everything up, put it in the box and given up, but I didn’t.

And now, I would never be in a situation where I didn’t have help or where I’m not surrounded by kind people.

What is the lesson that you want Paparazzi to take from this? 

Marilyn:  There is no difference between an Elite consultant and a star consultant.  The only thing is we don’t give up, No Matter What.  We don’t give up.  We don’t get stuck in our excuses.  And I’ve got 7000 excuses, all day, every day.  We just keep going.  And that is the lesson from that.

I picked everything up. Hung it back up.  Kept going.  And that’s what you have to do is just keep going and not let anything stop you.  Keep moving forward in faith no matter what.

Awnya: No matter what, that is huge.  I love in your story how there’s so many low points.  Like when you were sleeping on the floor and waiting to check in at the hotel at convention.  Like at convention people.  But she got there.  Can you say that?  Can you say that you would go somewhere where you maybe couldn’t even get into the hotel room?  That would be kinda scary!

Marilyn:  Like, make it happen.  No excuses.  I’m not going to miss this convention, even though I can’t afford to be here.  And I tell my team that when they give me all their excuses.  And I say, “You aren’t really reaching out to me with excuses.  And you think I’m going to live in your comfort zone with you?! Or I’m gonna hang out in your comfort zone with you?  After I slept on the ground?”  This business works!  You just have to keep going.

That’s it.  No excuses.  Don’t quit.  Make it happen.

Awnya:  I love that you touched on comfort zones there.  We could do a whole like 8 calls on comfort zones, but the thing I think about comfort zones is there’s no growth that happens in there.  There’s no fire.  There’s a quote:

So if you want to grow, get uncomfortable. Miss Marilyn was totally uncomfortable at the flea market sleeping on the ground with her kid or when the bottom fell out of the bottom of her van.  She kept going because she knew that something amazing was waiting on the other side.  Well, maybe not event that, but ya just knew that you had to push through and you had to keep going.

Cuz, you know, it can only get worse, but it’s not going to get better if you stay where you are at, right?!

Marilyn:  Right!  Yeah.  I didn’t even really understand.  THIS is totally uncomfortable for me.  Doing a podcast on network marketing.  Like who am I to talk about network marketing?  That’s the craziest thing ever.  I’m the person that hated it, which I know seems crazy.  “Ok, you’re an Elite consultant with Paparazzi Accessories.  Why would that be uncomfortable?”  Well, because it’s network marketing.  That’s not my comfort zone.

Which again sounds crazy, but everybody has their own thing going on in their head.  And you just have to keep pushing through it.  It’s mindset.  “I’m an Elite consultant with Paparazzi Accessories.  Who better to do an interview with you?!”  Like why do I not think THAT way. Get out of your comfort zone, change your mindset and watch your blessings blow you away.

Awnya: You know, another thing that totally surprises me by you saying that this is not in your comfort zone, many of you don’t know this about Miss Marilyn, but she was a performer before Paparazzi.  She was a fire-eater, if I’m not mistaken.  Right, Miss Marilyn?

Marilyn: Right.  A magician and a fire eater and an author.  Right. I’ve done some television and radio…

Awnya: So this should be right in your wheelhouse, but it’s totally not.

Marilyn:  Walking the runway was torture for me.  Modeling the Zi collection was torture.  It’s totally different to be yourself than to be a performer on stage.  It’s totally different.  WAY out of my comfort zone, which is an important thing to talk about.

People think, “Miss Marilyn is so comfortable in front of the camera.  Oh, Miss Marilyn can do anything.”  Misty is like, “You have no comfort zone.  You’re so fearless.”  I’m looking at her like, “What is wrong with you?!  Like, you are Cra-cra!  I am freaking out here at leadership summit.”

It’s me getting over myself and getting out of my own way.  Getting out of my comfort zone, and not blocking my blessings.  Changing my mindset, which is a struggle everyday if you are painfully shy, full of anxiety and suffer from depression.  It’s really a challenge.

So, every day I’m like, “God has put these people in my life.  They are my blessings from the box.”  Everybody in the company, not just the Blessed Bombshells.  I have to get out of my own way and serve others and honor Him.  I can’t do that in my comfort zone.

Which my comfort zone is where I am right now.  In my bedroom, probably writing.

What is a habit that you have that contributes to your success?

Marilyn: Don’t give up.  Truly my success does not come from me.  It is the Bombshells and they inspire me.  They don’t give up.  If they’ve got kids and husbands, they are working in the middle of the night and making it happen.  They truly are what is the consistency in my life. Their focus and drive and their inspiration.  And they’re consistent.  They are all of the things that I want to be.

Awnya:  I love that.  Consistency is key. If you are hit and miss, then your customers don’t know to rely on you.  Your team doesn’t know to rely on you.  You have to be consistent and whether your version of consistency is once a week or once a month or whatever, you have to let people know that

1- you are still in business

2- you have new jewelry

3- you have an opportunity for them to make money and have so much fun like you do as well.

You have to do that consistently otherwise people aren’t going to know that you’re in business and they are going to think that you are just trying something out or that it’s a whim.

Marilyn:  My consistency is being available to my team.  And I always wear the jewelry.  I have things that I’m consistent with, but I definitely get my inspiration from my team and they are the ones that have made this happen. They are just amazing.  I call them legends because what they did has never been done before.  And they truly are.  They do everything consistently and they’re coachable.  And that is key.  To be coachable.  The 2 C’s.  Look, we just created a theory.  Coachable and Consistent, is what I would say.

Awnya: You have to be open to new ideas.  If you are not coachable then that’s when pride comes in. We talked about this earlier in the call.  You have to have that humility.  It’s attractive.  People like that.

If you are out there like, “I’m the best thing since sliced bread,” people aren’t attracted to that because it’s not cool.  I don’t want to be around someone who thinks they are the coolest thing ever.  I want to be around somebody who is going to lift me up.  That comes from humility and from being coachable still.

I know a little a bit about you Miss Marilyn.  I’m going to throw you a little bit under the bus here.  Miss Marilyn had some really colorful displays.  I want to say it was last year that Misty, one of the founders, said, “Miss Marilyn, the jewelry needs to be the star of your displays, you need to go with black and white.”  And Marilyn was like, “No zebra print?!”

Marilyn: Right!  I about died.

Awnya:  Even though she was a little bit sad about losing that zebra print, she listened to Misty, cuz Misty knows what she’s talking about.  She was coachable and she changed things up.  And look at her now!  I mean, I can’t say that this one thing has changed her business, but it couldn’t hurt.

Marilyn: And I was shocked.  I’m looking at her, and I’m like, “What?!”  You know, all black??  How boring is that!  Like, what?!”

 So they have hashtags, Chani is sweet and Misty is sassy.  Chani is my security blanket and Misty pushes me out of my comfort zone.  And I don’t know how she knew I was coachable to tell me that.  Do you remember that I would post pictures and would be like, “Oh, I’m getting rid of the zebras.  Kill me now.”  Then I did my first event in April in 2015.  All black.  My mom went with me to that event and my mom is like Italian, over the top as well.  She’s like, “All black?” And I remember it was all morning….All black.  No hot pink.  No zebra.  Has everybody lost their minds?!  WE live for pink and zebra!

The only pink there was my feather boa.  Misty’s words are, “The jewelry should be the focal point.”  I changed it to the “star of the stage”  to wrap my head around it.  There’s a stage and the jewelry’s gonna star on it.  It makes total sense now, but at the time….

People just rebel and miss that because it goes back to that whole coachable thing.

What advice would you give to a brand new Paparazzi consultant?

Marilyn:  Wear the jewelry.  Take all of your costume jewelry and all your real jewelry, unless it’s sentimental.  Now I’m not saying to take the ring your grandmother gave you and put it away or the necklace that your husband gave you and put it away.
Awnya: Or your wedding ring.

Marilyn:  Right!  Or your wedding ring.  You are blessed to have a husband, rock that wedding ring.  BUT, other than that, take ALL your costume jewelry and only wear Paparazzi.  And watch your life completely change.

Awnya:  Now how many pieces do you tell people to wear regularly?  Robin says 5, try to wear 5.  How many do you suggest every day.

Marilyn.  I say 5 too, cuz 5 is my lucky number.  But I also say that you should wear 4 pieces and a hair accessory.  And if you don’t want to rock Hippie Headbands across your forehead, cuz we all went to convention last year and got everybody started wearing them. So I understand if that’s way outta people’s comfort zones.  Then take a flower, put it on your hat put it on your purse, put it on your shirt.

Oh!  I’ve put them on baseball hats, on Paparazzi hats.  I’m completely obsessed with Paparazzi, so I wouldn’t not wear a hair accessory at this point.  I’ve never worn anything but Paparazzi since the very first day I’ve opened that box, ever. You can go look at every single picture, ever.  And I always put a hair accessory somewhere.

Awnya: It’s so true too.  If you aren’t wearing the jewelry, how are people even supposed to know that you even have a jewelry business?  And how often do we hear of consultants selling necklaces right off their body? Or a bracelet?

I sold my favorite bracelet the other day.  I am still very sad about it because it’s not one I can buy again. I should know better than wearing my favorite things out in public, but I was buying my drink and the owner of the place said, “Oh my gosh, I love your bracelet.”  And I was like, “I sell it.  It’s $5.”  And she was like, “I need that in my life.” I was like, “Please no.   Don’t take my bracelet.” Then she says to me, “When can you come set up and sell you jewelry here in my shop?”  So I thought to myself, “selling jewelry in her shop and meeting all these people vs. $5 bracelet? Just give her the dang bracelet.”  But still, my heart broke.

Marilyn: I know!  It’s funny.  I try to wear blockbusters a lot.  Especially when I’m going somewhere new.  Like I have all these rules about how I’m going to wear all the jewelry.  Well, not really rules, but they are just kinda funny.  Same thing, you know.  “Oh, I’ll have to sell it off me. Ok, what am I going to wear today?  Cuz I don’t know these people” And I’m not going to say to somebody new, “No you can’t have it.” So how many of this bracelet do I have?  Can I put them in my purse and sell them out of my purse if everyone likes it?

Oh the struggle is real.  First world problems right?!

If you could suggest 1 thing to a consultant who is feeling stuck in their business, what would you tell them?

Marilyn: Put on some jewelry and go.  Just like what we just said, go where there’s some people.  And put on the BIGGEST piece of Paparazzi that you own.  Don’t like put a coat or a sweater over it.  Just go walk around and people will compliment you.

Awnya: You have to be where there’s people.  I mean, if you are sitting in your house, wearing you jewelry, you aren’t going to have those conversations.  You gotta get your butt out there and get working it.

Marilyn:  Make it happen. There is no reason to be stuck in this business or to be struggling.  If I can do this, for real, anybody can do this.  I have a head injury. I don’t even know what day it is most of the time.  If I can do this, anybody can do this.  The secret is to wear the jewelry and keep going.  Don’t get stuck in your excuses.

Awnya: I love what you said right there.  I’m gonna say it again.  Don’t get stuck in your excuses.

Marilyn: It’s truly the easiest business in the whole world.  The price point is fabulous.  And we get to party for a living.  And then Paparazzi spoils us.  Like, it’s crazy cool.  If you are stuck, you are in your own way.  Which is kinda cruel, but you know that I believe in this more than anything I’ve ever done in my entire life.

I eat breath, sleep, drink, walk, talk Paparazzi.  Like I live this 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.  There isn’t a moment I’m not thinking about Paparazzi, working on Paparazzi, thinking about my team, thinking about my friends in Paparazzi.  I LOVE this business, so when you tell me that it’s not working for you, I get so convicted.  It will work!  Get out of your way.

What is a quote you have that inspires you?

Marilyn:  That would be my mantra which is, “Claim Your Cleavage,” which also means, to claim your faith and it means:

believe in your dreams

It really is what gets me going every day and I say a Cleavage Creed to myself.  It truly inspires me to keep going and to star in my life because if you don’t star in your own life, who’s going to star in it for you?  You really just have to get out of your way. Claim your Cleavage.  Own who you are.  Believe in your dreams and make it happen.

What is a book you say is a must read and why?

Marilyn: The Bible.  The instructions are in there and my favorite quote from there is, “I can do all things with God who strengthen me.” because some days I’m like, “I do not know how to have a team with 666 people on it.  I do not know what to say to anybody.  I don’t even know what I’m doing.  I have no clue”.  You know?!  Then I just pray about it and I say that to myself, “I can do all things with Christ who strengthens me,” and I read from the bible and I just keep going.

Andrea Hutcheson - Paparazzi Jewelry Elite LeaderAndrea is Executive Producer with Paparazzi, a brand new Elite Leader!  She is Crown Club 25 and she has reached Life of the Party Silver.  She has been with Paparazzi since July 2012.

Andrea is from Lima, Peru.  So you will see that beautiful, sun-kissed skin.  She always looks like she has a tan.  It’s great!  She has only been in the United States since 2008 and when she came, she didn’t really know English!  Talk about a barrier and a challenge that she had to overcome in her Paparazzi business!  She didn’t know English!  She had to learn that.

What is your Paparazzi Why?

Andrea:  So in 2012 I was going to college for Education and money was tight and we didn’t have any extra money because we were going through a financial situation.  I was still going to college.  My friend invited me to a party and it was a jewelry party.  In my head I go, “I can’t afford jewelry.  Why would I need jewelry?”

Before, I didn’t wear much jewelry, I didn’t care for jewelry.  I like looking girly but I didn’t really care for it.  So I told her I couldn’t afford it and she was like, “Well, it’s only $5.” And I was like, “$5?!!  It must be like junky jewelry.” She said “Let’s just go look at it.”

I didn’t have any money with me.  I think I had maybe $3 in my pocket.  I told myself I wasn’t going to spend any money, I would just watch the other people buying the jewelry.

I went in there and Rachel Smith was doing the party.   She was like showing all this jewelry and then she comes out and says “Oh!  I have more jewelry,” and then she brought out boxes of more jewelry.

I just stopped and looked at all the ladies going crazy over this $5 jewelry. It was really cute.  The necklaces came with earrings and I just looked and looked at them.   I was like “Man!  This is a mine of gold because people are loving this jewelry.”  Then I started asking her questions.

She didn’t even ask me about anything, I just started asking, “How much do you make? How much is commissions? How much is it to get started.”  And I was like “I’m interested, but I don’t have the money.  What can I do to get some money and get started.  Do you have anything to get some money?”  Any way I could get to this jewelry! Oh, and I think I bought a few Starlet Shimmer cuz they were a dollar.

I couldn’t get it out of my head, so I started selling a bunch of stuff that I had that I gathered for garage sales and I could get some cash.  I asked her if I could do a basket party and earn maybe 10% towards my kit and I did!  I did everything that I could to get my kit.  Back then it was like $300 for the lowest kit.

Once I started, I did my launch party and oh my word!  I didn’t know anybody. Just people from church and work.  I worked at the work study at the college.  I did my first party.  My apartment was so small.  We couldn’t even fit a cat.  Just kidding .  But we couldn’t fit a lot of people.

So I didn’t know how I was going to do a party if I couldn’t fit anybody here.  So I looked at places and I asked my friend.  I did my first party at a museum!  How cool is that?!  It was so awesome.  I didn’t even have to pay anything!  She said I could give a donation, so I gave her some necklaces!

It was so fun!  I had 20 people come and I sold around $400.  It was my first party and that was the end of July.  Then I got into the school year and I was like “Ok, I’m going to back off because I need to get into my studies,” but then I started into Facebook adding people.  I didn’t have any friends, people.  I didn’t know anybody, I didn’t have anybody on my Facebook account.  I had to start all over and I knew the only way I could do this was through social media for now because I was working 2 jobs and I was going to school.

So, of course I would still show it to people.  In August, I got my refund from the school.  It was $1000.  I was like, I truly believe in this product, I know it will sell, I know I will make this money back.  I am going to invest $1000 without my husband knowing.

My husband wanted to kill me. I told him, “I promise I will get that money back,” which I did.  I invested $1000, I invested every single penny I had made back into the business for 6 months.  Now, in January, we had a tire that blew up so we needed tires and I had to put some of my money in there.  That was a blessing, but I was serious on getting into the business in September and I think I became a Director in the month of November. It was officially November that I was a Director.  I recruited 4 people in that month, in November.  Then I was like, I don’t know how to be a leader, but I’ll do it.

I just wanted to sell the jewelry.  You know, I have such a passion for the jewelry because its $5, everybody can afford it.  You don’t feel guilty about telling people about it.  You can say “Hey, just skip the burger and buy a necklace and you’ll look pretty many times.”  I just love it.  So the passion that I have for this is amazing.

The reason why I do Paparazzi is because I want to help my family.  I want to help other women know about this opportunity because it’s a huge opportunity.  I never thought in a million years that I would be sitting here doing this full time, quitting my 3 jobs and well, of course, I’m not going to school anymore.

I do want to take some classes, but I’m so into Paparazzi right now that even my husband changed his mind about it.  He was like, “We can do this together.  I can quit my job,” and I was like, “This is too much a little bit.”  But I love it and I do it mainly for financial reasons.  I want to be debt free.

In the 4 years I’ve been doing Paparazzi, we’ve paid so much in debt.  We have been able to go on trips that I never thought.  This year has been crazy.  We’ve been traveling so much and it wouldn’t be possible if it wasn’t for the business.

You know, sometimes I can even go and get my nails done because I want to or I feel like it.  There is no more pressure on, “Do I have the money?”

You know, we have a bus ministry for my church and if I want to, we can go have pizza and spend $100 on the kids and not feel guilty about, “Do I have enough in my bank account or do I have to go hungry if I have to pay a bill or something.”  So this is my full time job and I love it.  And this is why I do it, I love seeing other women find their financial freedom as well.

Awnya: a few things I want to point out from your story, Andrea –

She had ALL of the objections that you commonly hear from your hostesses or from people wanting to join your team.

  • Andrea had a small apartment
  • she didn’t have any money, she was selling things at a yard sale to get money for her kit
  • She didn’t know a lot of people and I mean, we aren’t talking someone who just says that.  She just moved to the country and didn’t speak any English!  That was a pretty legit thing
  • And then you didn’t have a lot of time.  You had 2 jobs and you were going to school.

So she had all of those things.  Usually you only get 1 or 2 from someone who is thinking of joining or hosting a party and they are like, “Well I don’t think I have enough time cuz I’m working two jobs.”

Andrea had all of those things and she still wanted to do Paparazzi and believed in it enough that she figured it out and look at her now.  She is one of the Elite leaders with Paparazzi!

So people, you can do it!  Get over the small apartment, find a museum, find a restaurant, talk to a friend, use the park!  It’s summertime, you can just go outside, but if you want to make it happen, you can make it happen.  Do you have anything to add to that Andrea?

Andrea: If I can do it, anyone can do it.  Especially with 2 jobs.  People think that I was just at home with my husband working.  No.  Before I quit, I needed to make a certain amount with Paparazzi and it needed to come every month.  I told my husband I would do it.  And that’s when I quit.  I was like, “Okay, I’m done!  I can do this.”

What is your worst Paparazzi moment? 

Awnya:  I’ve gotten a little bit of flack a little bit of kickback from this question because we like to think positive,.  We don’t like to think back to those bad moments, but I love to asking the leaders especially because the consultants who are struggling and the consultants who are having a moment of doubt love hearing that you guys have struggled too and how you have overcome that.

Andrea:  Absolutely.  I tell this every single time I see somebody struggling.  That was the moment I learned.  When we fail at something, it’s not about quitting, it’s not about thinking about that moment. It’s about learning and overcoming that situation.  I still remember my worst Paparazzi moment – I was so excited about Paparazzi, I was doing social media, I was going out and telling everybody about Paparazzi.  I would pass our fliers to people at Walmart so that they can either come to my party or buy Paparazzi.

I remember I went 2 hours away for a show and it was $40.  It was a fashion show.  I gave jewelry to all the girls who were Rocking the Runway and I was supposed to set up.  I was excited, it was my first event.  I told my husband, “Honey, it’s going to be great, people here have money and we’re going to sell this $5 Jewelry.”

And I set up and I was excited.  There were a lot of vendors there.  In that moment, I think one of the necklaces broke.  You know people say that it broke, but it was just loose.  I don’t call it broke.  Cuz it’s fixable.  Something that’s not fixable is then broken.  It was fixable and I was ashamed a little bit, but how I reacted to it was different.  I was like, “Oh, I can fix it so just get another necklace.” I didn’t make a big deal of it.

At the end when they finished the Rock the Runway thing and people were leaving, they were not even stopping by the vendors.  I think there was a few that were just looking.  It was at the mall and nobody would buy anything.  I think I only sold a necklace and a bracelet.

My brother was with me and I was like, “Are you kidding me?!  Its $10 that I just made but I just lost $40 I lost 2 hours going, 2 hours I need to go back and gas.”  It was expensive.  I was like, “Oh my word!  It was horrible.  What am I going to tell my husband?  I was a failure, I didn’t sell anything but 2 things.  I lost all the necklaces I gave away to the girls.  It was horrible.”

Then, as I was driving home, after having to pack up all the jewelry and all the stands, my brother was helping, I was mad.  I was like, “How in the world did I come all the way here?”  When I got home, it was like midnight or one in the morning and I don’t like driving at night.

I even had – ok this is how bad I am at driving – I didn’t know how to drive when I first came to this country because we don’t use the cars cuz they are so expensive in Peru.  You have to be like a millionaire to have a car.  We ride the bus or we walk. So anyways I was driving and a police car pulls somebody over but that guy was in front of me, so I pull over and I was behind the police car.  I pulled in behind the police car!  So another police car comes behind me.  He goes, “What are you doing?” and I said, “I thought he pulled me over.” And he said, “Just go home.”  And I was like – we just started laughing.  I was like, “This is the worst!  Oh my goodness!”

I told my husband that I didn’t make any money and I pulled behind a police car and he was like, “Oh my word.”  The only thing he said – this is what I remember was, “It’s fine, just don’t do it again.  It’s ok, just keep going.” and I was like “Okay”.  It was the worst Paparazzi moment cuz I didn’t make any money and I drove 4 hours, you know.  It was just horrible.

An there’s going to be events that are not going to go the way you want them to, but what I learned about events is that you gotta go with a set of mind that you’re going to book parties and you’re going to find a lot of people that you can have contact with and that you are going to follow up.  That’s what I learned about events.  I was like, “I’m not going to worry about if I’m going to sell above making booth rent, you know. I’m not going to worry about it.  I’m just going to book parties.”  Since I’ve had that mindset, it’s been amazing.  It’s been like “you were feeling discouraged, you were like, You may not book a party, and I knew that’s where the money was going to be.”

And then in July of that year, 2013, I found the county fair and I made – it cost me $150 for 7 days.  I was like “I’d better not do it.  You know, it’s $150.” I just thought, “I’m just going to do it.” And I sold $1000 and booked 20 parties at that fair.  So you just gotta keep looking for the right event and you gotta get out there.  You gotta have the mindset that you are going to book parties instead of selling a bunch. Cuz that’s what events are, you have to get your name out.  You have to get to know people and you know make contacts.  And if you sell a lot, that’s great.

So that was my worst Paparazzi moment.

Awnya: That is a great point though.  People can tell when you are desperate for a sale, people can tell when you need to make a sale.  It comes through somehow in your body language or something.  They can sense that, but when you are focusing on booking parties, like, the sales are gonna come more naturally.  You’re going to get more business on what you are already getting at that event.  You are extending your business, so it’s just kind of a win, win.  Such a great point.

Andrea:  You have to have a really good attitude.  If you are going to sit on your bottom and just look mad because somebody else did something or you didn’t get a good spot or they booked another Paparazzi consultant even though you told them they can’t have another one.  People are going to sense that and your attitude is going to show though.  You gotta be smiling.  You gotta be standing up and talking to people.  It’s just people skills, I guess!

Awnya: It’s so true!  I can’t tell you how many events I do as a vendor and I go walk around really quick and there’s that lady with her arms folded in the back of the booth with the grumpy face on, just kind of glaring art everybody who goes by and you are like “OOOOOO.  I don’t even want to shop from you!”  So be sure to have your smile on!  Even if it’s a fake smile and you’ve had a crappy day, keep your smile on your face cuz you gotta fake it till you make it.  Then you will still be happy and it will be a good thing.  Don’t be the grumpy lady.

What is a habit that contributes to your success?  

Andrea: I believe its consistency.  Consistency is a huge key.  And we hear it over and over and over again.  You gotta be consistent, you gotta keep doing it but it’s so true! I can’t emphasize that anymore.  I always say to my team members, when you get new team members, you create your team group.  Every single day you post quotes, you post things that are going to help them, but nobody else likes anything or comments under your pictures and stuff.  It can get discouraging.  You can think, “I’m a horrible leader, they aren’t looking at everything I’m saying.”  The one thing you need to look at is, if you stop posting, they aren’t going to look at it.  They are going to think you quit or that you aren’t doing anything cuz you are the backbone of this business for them.

If you stop doing something, they’re going to stop.  And it’s the same thing with our businesses.  When I first started Paparazzi in 2012, I created my VIP group.  Back then, they didn’t have Facebook parties, so I would post every single day.  Every single day, no matter what.  I wouldn’t attack them with tons of jewelry, but I would post quotes, things that happen every day, what am wearing today, look at these cute jewelry that I just got and the fashion fix.

And you have to be consistent.  Every single day you have to work your business.  No matter how many hours you have.  I didn’t have 2 hours to work my business when I was going to school and working.  Still I would make those 2 hours and post post post every single day.  Now, for example, it’s been 4 years now that I’ve had my VIP group.

In May, we had a lot of issues, this year, I’ve been traveling a lot and it’s been hard for me to keep up the posting every single day.  In May we went through a lot and found out that Danny had cancer.  That kinda put me off and I didn’t post for a whole 2 weeks, and people were like, “Where’s Andrea?”  They were wondering where’s Andrea.  I didn’t tell them anything because I didn’t want to impose on them.  It was very very hard situation but you gotta keep posting.

Well, we found out that Danny doesn’t have cancer anymore.  Yay!! So I came back.  And I was like, “Do you miss me?” to my customers and they were really nice.  They were like, “We were praying for you.  We were following everything you posted,” and they’re back and I’m doing a huge sale this month and I’m having some parties booked, you know, getting back into it.

But you have to be consistent in everything.  You cannot just stop.  And people stop usually in the summer and that’s when you need to not stop.  They can’t stop in the summer because if you stop in the summer because everybody says the summer is to slow, low in sales.  It’s up to you!

I was looking at look my numbers and in July, I order over 1000 PV and I was like “Who is saying that?!”  June and July don’t need to be slow, it’s up to you!  How you treat those months will tell you how your fall is going to come.  When August and September comes, you are going to be stronger if you stay stronger in your summer months.

So I think consistency is key for any business.  You just gotta keep going no matter how you feel.  And same with team members, you gotta really keep up with them and you gotta follow up with people.  Yeah, there’s a lot of thing.

Awnya:  It’s what I call the Shiny object syndrome.  I do it in my life, I do it in my Paparazzi business.  Somebody will be like, “Oh my gosh, have you tried this?” And I’m like “Oh my gosh! It’s so exciting, it’s a shiny thing.”  So I go do that or I look at that or I hear somebody say, “Have you tried the new way to do Facebook parties?” And even though I should really just stick with the way I’m doing it, I’m like “Oh, if they are having success that way, then I should do it that way too.”

And I think it’s really easy to jump like that and think that if they have success that way then it needs to be that way.  So what I’m going to say to everybody listening, to Paparazzi, if you have something that works, stick with it, and be consistent.  And if someone is finding success some other way, good for them, but don’t be changing how you are doing things.  Don’t be looking at the newest and the greatest shiny objects.  I mean, stay up to date on the newest technology and stuff but don’t just jump from one thing to the next to the next.  When you are consistent, your customers are going to love that and they are going to count on that.  Your consultants and people that are even thinking about being a hostess or a customer or a consultant, they need that consistency.

Andrea: Exactly

Awnya:  They need that consistency from you.  It’s an example thing, right?!

Andrea: Right.  And it’s the same thing when they see you in person.  How are they going to believe that this is really a business?  Are they going to take you seriously if you aren’t just not doing what you are supposed to?

People see a different Andrea.  I guess not. I’m just crazy.  They see me and I hear that I’m nice and I’m not stuck up and I don’t look down on people.  I do make money with Paparazzi and they are like, “Oh my goodness I never thought you could make so much money with Paparazzi.  And I’m like, “Yeah I do and I work at home.”  But when you say you work at home, they thing you are playing with jewelry and stuff and it’s not true!  You do work!  It’s a lot of work.  They are going to see that.  They are gonna see if you are selling the jewelry and everything you do.

How do you think Andrea has the biggest parties on Facebook?  Because Andrea keeps working her network!  And people think that I just do Facebook parties, but I don’t.  I love home parties. The only thing I hate about home parties or events is setting up.  But I love doing them and I do them.  I have a big calendar full of events right now.  But I do them.  But everybody knows me because I’m very consistent on Facebook cuz that’s where I work.  I work on Facebook with Paparazzi!

Awnya:  Everyone can see that because it’s online so they know that you are there.  It’s harder for them to see that you are going to a home party.

A quick correlation I want to draw with what we are just talking about – I’m not a big gambler, so you might get that in this analogy, but I think it is so On Point with what we are talking about .

So if you are in Las Vegas and you are at one of the tables, and you are just killing it every single time.  Winning $1000.  Winning $1500.  Winning $800.  Are you just going to walk away and just go to the table where everyone is losing?  Of course not!  You’re going to stay there and you’re going to keep winning because Every. Single. Time. You are winning.  It’s not even actually gambling cuz you are just winning.  It would be ridiculous to go to another table and another table and another table where other people are losing or its a 50-50 shoot because you are WINNING.

Same thing with your Paparazzi business.  If you’ve found what works, stick to it.  Double down with where you are at, with what you are doing and keep your success going. Don’t pick up and go somewhere or try something that you don’t know that you’re going to have success in, like how you do your Facebook parties.  Don’t all of a sudden change your format because you heard that this is the new way to do it or jump over to Periscope.  If you are established on Facebook and doing your Facebook parties that way, don’t just drop all of that and go to Periscope because you don’t know if it’s going to work the same.  Now I’m not saying not to try new things, but don’t just abandon what you are doing for new things.

Andrea: Right.

If you could suggest 1 thing to a consultant who is just starting out in their Paparazzi business, what advice would you give them? 

Andrea:  Invest.  Invest because a habit you need to have is consistency.  If you have a huge inventory, people are more likely to go with you because you have a big selection.  It is hard, it is hard.  I didn’t have money and I invested for 6 months.  My husband was about to kill me because he wasn’t seeing any money.  And I told him, “Honey, after I’m done, then you will see money, cuz then I don’t have to invest anymore.  All I have to do is buy the jewelry that I sold back.”

So I invested until I had 900 pieces, I wanted 900.  I don’t know why I didn’t want 1000, but I wanted 900 pieces.  Once I got that, it was so easy. I didn’t have to worry about if I had 2 home parties, if I was going to run out of inventory.  Back then, I used to do Facebook with my inventory.  When I do my flash sales, I still use my inventory.

You have to have inventory to sell.  You can’t do a party with 35 pieces.  You can do a party with 100, but it would be easier to do a basket party.  But what if out of the blue, some says, “I want to do a fundraiser for you.”  Oh my goodness!  500 pieces.  They are going to go with somebody else because you don’t have them.  You have to invest in any kind of business to grow.  This is your business.

What is it you are going to choose to do.  Are you going to just whine?  Some people just make money and they don’t invest it anymore.  They just use it for something else and then they are out of money and they only have 30 pieces.  Oh my!!  It’s horrible.  So yeah, my advice would be to invest.  Invest.  Invest.  And I’m not saying JUST invest.  You have to SELL it.  You can just invest as you are going.  Sell it and put it back, sell it, put it back until you have the amount that you want.

And don’t quit.  I mean, you can’t just give up.

Awnya:  That’s great advice!

What would you suggest to a consultant who is feeling stuck in their business.  What is 1 thing you would tell them to do to get their Paparazzi business rock’n again?

Andrea:  Start over.  It sounds harsh, but if you aren’t hitting Director anymore, if you hit Director once and you aren’t anymore, then start over. My goal every single month is to recruit 5 people and to sell at least 1000 pv.  You just have to have goals every single month.  You have to.  

If your team members aren’t working anymore, because it’s going to happen – do you know that out of 20 people that you have recruited, only 1 will be, maybe, only 1 will be the one that is going to be taking the business to the next level.  So I have personally sponsored 160.  Do you think those 160 are active?  Do you think those people who are on my team took me to Producer are the same that took me to Premier Producer or to Executive Producer?  

No!  They didn’t take me there.  I mean, they aren’t the same people because people quit.  People give up.  People don’t want to struggle anymore.  People don’t want to take this business to the next mile.  Go to the next step because they are facing trials but in any kind of work, you are going to face trials, but then the lights will come out!  

Can you imagine, Andrea, hit Director in November of 2012.  Andrea tried to hit Premier Director – back then it was Director, Premier Director and Producer.  But Andrea wanted to hit Premier Director. Andrea wanted it so bad and she worked so hard for over a year.  Andrea could not hit Premier Director.  

In 2013 in November, Andrea hit Producer!  From Director to Producer!  Can you image if Andrea would have stopped???!! Because she couldn’t hit Premier Director, because she couldn’t get there because one of her legs was bigger and she couldn’t hit it.  It was so hard because she wanted it SO bad. And BOOM!  It just happened.  Producer!  AHHH!  And I was like, “What?!”  It was crazy!!  

I don’t know, I still think if I would have just stopped in the middle of it, Andrea would have never quit her job, Andrea would have never been making the money that she’s making now.  

I still remember in February of 2013 when I sold 1000 pieces in 1 month, it was my 1st month that I sold 1000 pieces and Andrea had a check of over $3000. It was awesome.  And it was all because of sales.

It was exciting because as a person you feel rewarded because you’re doing it,  you know?!  When you are working with your team, and you start to hit Director and Producer, your team got you there.  And it shows that you have been working with you team because they got you there.  

When you sell so much that you hit Life of the Party, it’s such a rewarding feeling because you did it.  You made it happen.  You sold all those pieces, so I like those.  So I try my best even though I’m an Executive Producer now.  That doesn’t stop me from selling, except for last month.  Last month was a bummer.  That was because I was unfocused.  But you get back to it. I was going through so much, I was feeling stuck.  But I know that what I need to do is go back to basics and do it again.  And stop looking for new ways to earn money.  

Just like Awnya said, stop looking for new ways.  Find something that works for you and keep doing it and keep doing it and keep doing it.

It is so true!  You never know when you are going to go from Director to Producer in One month!!  That is so awesome. I love that!

It’s not about the money now.  It’s about seeing other people succeed and being able to quit their jobs and do what you are doing.  It’s not about the money.  Of course I want my husband to quit his job and do business with him and it will happen, but when someone said put God first and I keep my family together and I do my paparazzi business.  Just like anything, I put everything into it and everything will fall where it’s supposed to fall.

Awnya: You gotta have that balance.  Yeah, you don’t want to get off kilter, because Paparazzi is meant to accentuate our lives and make it better.  You don’t want to throw everything else out of whack.  Then the people who are important in your life will start screaming for attention, so find that balance.  That’s perfect!

What is a book you would say is a Must read and why?

Andrea:  Right now, I am reading John Maxwell’s book about Growth – The 15 Invaluable Laws of Growth.

The next one would be Erick Worre, Go Pro.  When I read his story, I was like, “Oh my word, it’s so true!”  It’s about leadership and how you need to deal with people.  Seriously, at first I thought I was a bad leader.  I thought I wasn’t given the tools.  I wasn’t helping people get to where they wanted and I was blaming my job as a leader because they weren’t getting to where I wanted them to be.

But as a leader you have to learn, and I’ve learned the hard way that you can’t give people success.  You can’t do it for them.  You can’t do everything that you tell them to do for them.  You can only give them the tools and if they choose to do it, then yay them!  But if they don’t, you can’t blame yourself.

You have to work with people that want it.  You can’t invest your time in people that are so negative and that keep putting excuses on everything.  You are not going to find go-getters if you don’t go find them every single month.  So I learned that we have our products that sell.  We have a $5 product that sells and we have a product.  Everybody in Paparazzi has the same product that we have, but how you present it is different.

What if there was a battle between myself and another consultant who is not as active as I am and the person – the customer- has to choose who she wants to go with.  Let’s say the consultant doesn’t have the inventory that I have.  Right now I have 1300 – 2000.  Um, I’ve got an addiction.  So she doesn’t have the inventory that I have and she doesn’t have the courage and excitement that I have.  Even with my bad days, I’m excited.

And yes, sometimes I do fake it when I don’t feel good because I want my customers to be excited about what I’m selling.  So I’m going to present it differently than her.  I’m going to be like, “Oh my goodness, its’ $5 .  Look at this. OH!”  And I’ll put it on here, and I’ll show her on the mirror, but I’ll be different on how I present it.

We have the same compensation plan and we judge people and we say, “Why are you making more money than I am?” or “Why is their business growing so much?”  We have the same compensation plan!  We might be different colors, we might be men or women, but we still have the same compensation plan.  Why are you not making it work??

The third thing is it’s up to you.  If you are going to choose to keep going no matter if your leader is helping you, if your leader is there- you have to do it yourself.  I didn’t depend on my leader, I didn’t depend on nobody buy my family and God and myself.  I depended on me.  I was like “I have to get this.  I’m going to get it! I’m going to sell 1000 pieces.  I’m going to do this.”  It was because I wanted it.   I didn’t depend on no body.

You can’t depend on your leaders. I am sad if you have a horrible sponsor or somebody who doesn’t know or work much, but their roll is to give you the tools that you need.  They can only tell you what you can do and give you ideas, but it’s not up to them if you are successful or not.  Cuz I was seriously was like “Aaaaaaa!”  When I realized that I can only give them the tools, I can care for them, but I can’t invest my time on people that aren’t going to do anything with the business.

So it was harsh, but yeah. That would be my must reads.

Last question.  What is a parting piece of guidance for us? 

Oh my goodness.  Go to convention.  Yay!  So, ok you’re not going to believe this, but I didn’t go to convention till last year was my 1st year at convention and I have been with Paparazzi almost 4 years.   But the energy, the excitement, it was just amazing!  The people helping you, nobody judging you. It was awesome.  If you can spend money on going to convention, it’s so worth it.

You get excited, you see the new product, you see the new line.  And then you can come back and tell your customer about it, tell your team members about it.  I remember I went to convention last year and I bought like 500 pieces.  It was like 5 of each necklace and there was only 100 pieces so I had to buy like 5 of each.  I was like “What am I doing, I’m coming back with so many!  I think I told my husband to lend me $2500 and that was to pay for everything, convention, the trip and everything. And I told him I was going to pay him back within a week after convention.

And oh my goodness, the pressure, it was awesome.  There was so much adrenaline!  I was like Ok, I’m buying 500 pieces, I’m going to sell them and I’m going to make $2500 back and I’m not going to have to pay anything.  I had a party the week after I came back.  Before that I did a periscope and a video showing the all the jewelry I just bought.

I even took a picture of the guy.  They had to give me like 2 big boxes cuz I was taking it home, we were driving home.  And I think I sold 500 and some pieces at my party on Facebook and it was so awesome!  They were like, “I wanted to see more, I thought you were going to have more variety.” But even they like, “sold, sold, sold, sold, sold.”  And there was extra Solds even when I didn’t have anymore.  It was crazy!  It was so cool.

I guess I’m the kind of person that puts goals ahead of me every single month.  I have goals and my goal is like to beat the month before, but I always have to recruit 5 people.  The thing is that I don’t get discouraged if I don’t hit it because I’m 1 step closer than I was the month before, so when I don’t recruit 5 people but I recruit 3, I’m still having a party.  When I don’t’ sell 1000 pieces, but I sell like 700, I’m still having a party.  So, that’s the kind of person that I am I guess.  Not everybody is that way.  Some people get discouraged and I’m like “I know!” But I don’t. I’m like “I’m doing this!”

Awnya: I love that!  That is the BEST advice ever!  Go to convention!  The first year I was with Paparazzi, I’d signed up months before.  During the opening ceremony, I was literally having my daughter in the hospital.  I was giving birth, so there was not really any possible way I could go to that convention and I sat in my hospital room and I cried because I wanted to be at convention so bad! I was watching everything on Facebook and everybody on my phone and I was just so sad.

I was determined to go my 2nd year and I did and I made it there.  When I got there and was sitting in my seat for opening ceremony and everything started and just the energy and excitement!  And I mean, it’s not just hype people, this is soul-infusing excitement.  I was sitting there and just started crying.  And I’m not a crier.  I think I just said I cried like 3 times in that sentence, but I’m not a crier.  When my husband sees me crying he knows something’s truly wrong.

So I’m sitting in the opening ceremony, trying to dance but I am just crying because I knew that it was life changing.  And you will feel the exact same way if you go to convention.  It will totally transform your life. My husband even, a week or two after the first convention, said that I was a different person after convention.  He could tell that the fire was under me.  People aren’t just saying that this is life changing.  People aren’t just talking about this because its hype.  You gotta get there.  It will change your business.

In today’s Elite Leader interview, I chat with Natalie Hadley.  Natalie is a beautiful inside and out and her passion for Paparazzi, the consultants and the jewelry is contagious!  She has some great advice and wisdom to share with us today in our training interview!

Natalie Hadley - Paparazzi Accessories Elite LeaderNatalie Hadley is an Executive Producer with Paparazzi Accessories.  She is a Crown Club 10 member.  She reached Life of the Party Bronze in 2015, the first year they did the Life of the Party awards.  She has a team of over 8000 people.  Natalie is going to share her story about Paparazzi and how she got into it in just a minute, but a few things that I wanted to share with you is that she put her husband through school and bought him a new car.  They go on fun family vacations and they got a new house because of Paparazzi.

How did you get started with Paparazzi and what’s your Why?

Natalie: Thanks Awnya!  Too sweet, you’re too sweet.  So I was in a tough position financially for years.  Finances were just really tight and really scrimping by.  My husband decided he wanted to go back to school.  He applied for the program a couple of times and he finally got in to be a respiratory therapist.  The programs like that in the medical field required him to do so many clinical hours and book work so he could only work 1 day a week.  So we had lived in a little home and we had to sell that and we moved in with my amazing in-laws.  It was up to me to provide for our family of 4.

A week later I was at a boutique at my neighbor’s house.  It was a multi-vendor boutique that had all those awesome vendors in it and one stuck out to me.  It was Paparazzi jewelry.  It had the most people there.  It was the most fun booth!  It was so fun!  Women were buying this jewelry.  Parties were being booked.  Sales were being made.  It was just awesome.  And to top it off, everything was only $5.  I could buy a couple pieces of jewelry and not feel bad about it.

I was so excited because I saw how well it did.  I signed up a week later.  I’m so glad that I did!  I booked my calendar out with home parties.  I built my displays.  I did home parties.  I could take my kids with me if I needed to and they could help me set up.  I just made sure I booked out parties.

It was so fun and so natural to talk to everybody.  It was easy and exciting and it was so much fun to recruit doing home parties.  I loved seeing women trying on necklaces and how they felt beautiful.  Nothing beats helping someone feel good about themselves.

So to me, it’s so much more than the finance aspect. Even though that’s been such a blessing through Paparazzi.  That’s my why and how I got started.

Awnya: We hear a lot of times in Paparazzi, “It’s so much more than $5 Jewelry”. And I think it’s so true.  For my life, I could not even vocalize all the things that Paparazzi is to me other than the $5 Jewelry.  It’s friendships and so much more!

Natalie: Yes!  Yes Agreed. 100% yes!

What is your Worst Paparazzi Moment?

Natalie: This is so funny.  So, like I said, I love to do home parties.  I was asked to set up outside a store here in Utah.  We sat our jewelry out at the store I went with another consultant and we set our jewelry up.  And we have awesome boards.  My boards have sand in them.  They can really withstand a windstorm.

Well, we had our boards set up in front of the store.  Wind came and just knocked – our boards were just full of jewelry and it knocked every single board down like flat on the boards face – if the board were to have a face.  And I thought, “I can freak out or I can just handle it and I can be positive and have a good attitude.” So I did.

I saw a lot of jewelry under there being broken.  Probably 30-40 pieces broken, but you know what?  It is a tax write off.  And I thought “Ok. You know what?  It’s paid for, it’s fine.  It’s written off.”   The cute customers and people around us helped us put it back together and I was able to fix some of those pieces.  We made some really good friends trying to fix the jewelry and customers were trying to help us put the jewelry back together.

And I thought, “Look!  Instead of freaking out, look how many positive things I can find from that and handle it with class rather than just get freaked out.”  You know, because that’s what I wanted to do.  We had lots of help and we got those boards up and you know what, it was fine.  We had plenty of jewelry.  We were able to save about half those pieces.

Awnya: Talk about making lemons into lemonade.  I mean, if you were sitting there and maybe one of the customers that helped you pick up the jewelry, maybe she’d been to a boutique a week ago and there was a different jewelry consultant there who was kinda grumpy but she was thinking “Hey, jewelry might be kinda my thing.”  Then she comes to this event and sees you letting that roll off your back and making the best of a bad situation.  Do you think she is more likely to sign up with you or that other consultant?  Well, it’s going to be you because of your attitude.  That’s contagious! People like that!  They don’t want the grumps.

Natalie:  That’s right.  I had to keep it together.  Ya know?!  And I thought, “Ok, no big deal.”  You know?!

Awnya: Absolutely!  And you never know when those people are watching you so it’s always a good idea to keep that good attitude and turn those lemons into lemonade.

What is a habit you have that contributes to your success:

Natalie:  Consistency.  There are so many things about Paparazzi.  It’s more than $5.  We can recruit, we can have teams, we can make money off sales.  So consistency to everything.  If you want to do home parties, Facebook parties, events.  Always be consistent and fill up your schedule.   I’ve always had a full schedule.

The only time I have not done a party is if I’m at convention or on a trip, of course paid for by Paparazzi, or a vacation with my family.  But just consistency.  It’s calling your team members.  Just being consistent when you post, if you do Facebook parties.  I would say I never have an empty calendar, ever.  I always have parties on the calendar. So consistency with parties.

Awnya:  Perfect!  Consistency with parties both live and with Facebook parties.

Natalie: Yep!  When I first started there were no Facebook parties yet.  So now I do more Facebook parties than home parties but I still do home parties.  I like to have one here at my home once a season.  I would say whether it be home, Facebook, events, whatever, always be consistent and always have some sort of selling opportunity on your calendar for sure.

Awnya: That’s great because if you don’t have those opportunities to show your customers what’s out there, they’re going to go somewhere else to shop.  So often with direct sales businesses, people change and fizzle out.  Life happens, we get that, but they don’t know for sure that you’re in business unless you’re having an open house or  unless you’re having a  party or  unless you’re doing business and letting them know.

Don’t just assume that they know that you’re still doing business, you gotta actually talk about it and let them know.  I love that you do a party once a season and that you are still doing Facebook parties.

You guys, Natalie has 8000 people on her team so she could really easily just sit back and let the Fashion Fix come every month and collect those paychecks but she is still out there actively working her business because number one, she loves her customers and number 2, it’s such a good example for her team.  She gets a good feel for what her customers want and get to talk to those people and always make new friends.

Never think that you are going to get to a level where you are just done because its constantly just having fun with $5 jewelry.

Natalie:  That’s totally right, yes!

What advice would you give to a brand new consultant?

Natalie:  I would say, get your displays ready.  Whatever avenue you want to take with Paparazzi and get that figured out and get a party on the calendar.  I always say, “Get 3 parties booked before your kit comes and plan your kit opening party.  Even if it’s just with your family or your friends.”  Do what you need to do to get your business up and running.  If you’re doing Facebook things, if you’re doing VIP group things.  Get the envelopes, get your scale.  Get everything you need to do so you can hit the group running with your business.

Don’t put off starting.  Start.

You want to get off to a good start.  If you don’t start right away, you may not ever start and that box might just sit there and stare at you, and you don’t want that!  It’s $5!  It’s exciting.  The energy with Paparazzi is unexplainable sometimes.  You have to experience that box opening and at convention.  The energy with this $5 jewelry is just amazing.  So do what you can to get your business up and running for sure.

Awnya:  One of the quotes that has really stood out to me lately is:

If you aren’t embarrassed by the thing you put out first, then you’ve waited too long.

The way that I think about that is – it’s not going to be perfect when you start your VIP group.  Your first parties and events are probably going to be train wrecks, when you look back at them.

I remember my first event and I didn’t have tape.  My son was helping me set up.  I had to run to Walmart to get zip ties for my boards cuz they were going to fall over on my customers.  I didn’t have enough display hooks.  I don’t even think I had enough bags.  It was a complete train wreck.  But I got out there and I did it.  So just get out there, if you are starting out.  Like what Natalie said, book 3 parties before your kit even gets to your door and don’t worry about being perfect, just worry about just getting it out there and letting the product speak for itself.

Natalie.  Exactly, exactly.  100%.

If you could suggest 1 thing to a consultant who is feeling stuck in their business, what advice would you give to them?

Natalie:  Start your business over.  If you have people signed up on your team, maybe it’s not the right season for them to do their business.  You know what?!  Start over, recruit more people.  You can still reach out to them and be their friend.  Still be nice but start your business over.  Start like if you were a Director.  Maybe you want to hit Premier Director.  Well, do the same things you did to hit that first rank.  Just never give up and like I said, if you are selling your jewelry, you’re meeting new people.  The key is to always be selling your jewelry so you can have more parties so you can get new recruits.  If you don’t have parties, it’s hard to get parties booked.

Also if you are stuck in a rut and you don’t have any parties.  Go through your parties on Facebook.  Go through and pull up past hosts see if they will re-book.  And don’t be scared to be told no. Go for the no.  Don’t be scared because from my experience, every 10 people I ask, I at least get 2 yesses.  Just keep going and keep going until you get a party and don’t give up.  Keep trying.  Keep trying.  That’s my advice.  So don’t give up.

Awnya: Back to the basics, right?  Go back to what got you to where you are.  The fundamentals to your business.  Booking parties.  Talking about Paparazzi and the $5 and the opportunity that’s there.  When you get back to that stuff, everything just falls into place.

Natalie: for sure.

I love that one.  It’s simple and it really goes with every aspect of your life and your business life.  Every day you can try to call more team members.  Try to develop a personal connection with your hosts.  In everything you do just try a little harder to do things a little better.  I love that.  So that’s one of my favorite quotes.

Awnya:  There is a quote that I heard that is “Compare and Despair.”  I love that one because when you are comparing yourself to others you are always going to be despairing.  You need to be comparing yourself to the version of yourself yesterday and trying to be better than that, which goes right along with your quote.

Make a better version of yourself every single day.  That’s the only person you should be comparing to and the only thing you should be trying to do is to improve yourself every day in your business and your personal life and just trying to be better.  And if you’re doing that, then you are going to grow your business, you’re gonna grow your life.

Natalie:  That’s right!

What is a challenge – an action step – that you would give to us to do in the next 7 days?

Natalie:  I know I’ve said this 2 times already on the call but get your parties booked for July.  Get a full calendar for July.  How you are going to do that is just like I said.  Go back, past hostesses, message them individually.  Your friends, your family.  Send them a text message.  Don’t ask them for a favor.  You’re doing them the favor by helping them earn free jewelry.

So I look at it from that aspect in your VIP groups. Message some of those awesome customers, “Hey you can get jewelry for free!”  As you go about your home parties or events bring your calendar with you.  Don’t be afraid to get those parties.

And have fun.  The more fun you make it, the more they are going to want to book with you.  Get to know your hosts.  Get to know your customers.  Because the more they know you, the less awkward it is to ask them when it’s time to book a party.

Booking actually begins the minute you step foot in the party or the minute you start your Facebook party. You need to be engaged in your parties. That’s where you are going to book your parties.

If you were to ask somebody that you didn’t really interact with to do a party, you know, they might say yes, but more times no, compared to the person that you really tried to connect with and build that genuine relationship.  This is fun!  Comment on their posts.  Have fun with them.  That is the key.  Get parties booked for July.  Have a full calendar in July.

Awnya:  I know everyone has a different version of a full calendar, but what, to you, is a full calendar?

Natalie:  I would say 3-4 selling opportunities a week.  So whether it be post every day in your VIP group or have a basket party going out and 3 Facebook parties or posting in your VIP group every single day.  Maybe 20 pictures a day.  Do something 3-4 times a week that would be a selling opportunities.

If that’s too much, it’s ok.  Cut it to 2.  Pull it back.  I love Paparazzi because you can make it work for you.  If you have 2 parties on the calendar, great!  If you have 1 party on the calendar, great!  Make it full.  Have something every single week to make it consistent.

Awnya: One thing I love about what you said is that you are offering to do parties for these people.  You’re not going on there and saying “You’re gonna do a party for me, you’re gonna do it Thursday night and it’s going to be at 7-o’clock”.  You are OFFERING these people the opportunity to share with their friends the amazing new jewelry.

Natalie:  That’s right

Awnya I think a lot of times, especially because we are sales people, we kinda forget that we aren’t pushing this stuff on people.  We are just giving them the opportunity to say yes or no.  And if you don’t offer then they are never going to have that opportunity.  So by messaging these people, you could even say something like:

 “Oh. My. Gosh, girl!  I have been thinking about you because the new spring jewelry is coming out.  I know your favorite color is Spearmint green and that is what we have.  Would you want to have a party and get some free spearmint green jewelry and show all your friends the new stuff?”

You aren’t saying “Put this in your shopping cart.  Buy it. And then make all your friends buy 10 pieces too.”  You are just offering an opportunity.  And then like what you said earlier, they can say yes, they can say no.  But if you don’t ask, then it’s always going to be a no.

Natalie:  Right, exactly.  Yep!

Awnya: Today we have on the call Michelle Johnnie, one of the Paparazzi Elite leaders.  Michelle quit her job as a SPED teacher when she started having kids.  Money got tighter and tighter as 3 children joined the family and she was always looking for ways to bring in extra money without going back to work full-time.

When her 3rd baby was only 5 weeks old, she saw some cute $5 jewelry at a festival booth.  She knew it was a million dollar idea.  She could sell something that was only $5 and was super cute.  So she jumped in and started working towards her goal of making a few hundred dollars a month.  Within just a few months she was making a couple thousand dollars a month.

Her husband quit his job  9 months after she started Paparazzi.  And that’s been supporting their family for the last 4 years.  Michelle is a Maven A-lister and has one of the biggest teams in the company.  She enjoys heling others learn how they can pay their bills with Paparazzi.  She is grateful for the relationships she has built and the places they have traveled and how Paparazzi ahs improved their finances and their lives.

Michelle is Crown 25 and she has reached Life of the Party Bronze access.  If you know Michelle, you know she truly is “the life of the Party”!

Michelle:  I am the life of the party.  Come on, let’s be real.  I have fun wherever I go.  That’s what life is all about.

Michelle, what is your Why?  Why do you do Paparazzi?

Michele:  When I first started Paparazzi we just needed a little bit of extra money to make sure that we could pay our bills and have a little bit left over for fun things to do with the kids.  I thought when I saw Paparazzi for the first time, I could sell $5 Jewelry and bring in extra money and that could help our family.  When I first started it was to bring in some extra money.

Now, I still need to make some money because that supports our family.  I really love helping people now and teaching them to do what I’ve done and teaching them how to sell and to get places.  I love all the friendships I’ve made with Paparazzi.  I am just a happier person now than when I joined Paparazzi.  Way less stressed and I have way more friendships in my life and more money.  And my family gets to do really fun things because of Paparazzi.

Bottom line, I joined because I needed money and I still do it because I need money but at the same time it has enriched my family’s life so much that I’m grateful that I can keep contributing to the family and have some freedom and flexibility and do these fun things with the family because of Paparazzi.  We just got back to Utah from 9 days of traveling to Washington and Idaho and doing trainings and seeing the sights.

In a few weeks we are heading back to the Midwest to do some trainings there, sightsee and amusement parks.  There are so many reasons why I keep doing Paparazzi.  It’s just been amazing for my family.

Awnya: One of the things that you said in there, is that your why changed and that your why when you started was just money and now it’s so much more.  Meeting people, helping people, growing your team, it just kind of evolves, doesn’t it?!

Michelle: yeah.  One of the trainings I was doing last week, I just started crying because I can actually donate money to places now.  And some of my best friends now are people I’ve met thorough Paparazzi. And not just teammates, but like customers and hostesses.  They’ve become my friends.  I just feel like every part of my life has been improved because of Paparazzi.  The why I do it now is like 10 fold instead of just 1 reason.

Let’s take a bit of a shift.

Draw us a picture, take us to your worst Paparazzi moment

Michelle: I had to think hard to come up with a bad moment with Paparazzi.  I don’t know if this is the worst one, cuz I don’t feel like I’ve had a lot of bad moments with Paparazzi.  There’s little things like once in a while someone will cancel a party or something slightly disappointing will happens, but I had to think hard!

There’s a little one when one time I didn’t weight down my displays well enough and a wind came along and it leaned on a customer, but like they caught it.  I thought that was a little bit embarrassing but it wasn’t a big deal.

I was thinking back about one thing that was like *sigh*.

I thought about a show I did in Los Angeles, in LA.  So my husband had quit his job, but before he quit his job, I just went for it.  I had booked these shows thinking, I’m gonna go big and I’m gonna get this huge team all over the country and the way I need to do that is to travel to other states and do these huge evens and sign up tons of people there.  So I booked these 3 events, the were called Ultimate Women’s Expos in San Francisco, LA, and Phoenix and I live in Logan Utah (northern Utah).  All of them were $1100 booth fees.  We’re talking major investment.

I booked these before my husband quit his job and I just had to do a little down payment on my booth. So then my husband quit his job and they are all in the same month, in October.  I’m like super stressed because we have nothing to fall back on.  It’s Paparazzi or nothing, right?!  And keep in mind, when my husband quit his job, I wasn’t making $5000, $10000, $ 20,000, a month.  I was making $3000 – $3500 depending on the month.

And So, I had to come up with the rest of the money and I thought I would have team mates in the areas by the time they get here because I booked them in like March.  I thought “yeah, people will be joining my team there and they can come help me with these events.”  In San Francisco I had teammates there and I stayed with them.  They came and helped me with the event and they got to keep the leads for teammates and parties.  Same with Phoenix.

I didn’t have any teammates in LA.  I was begging people to come with me to LA.  I was begging other people from other teams, just any one come with me.  I thought “I cannot do an $1100 event with 20,000 – 30,000 women all by myself.”  Nobody could come.

And then a miracle happened.  If you really want me to go into it, I feel like God is part of my business and I was just praying so hard that this would work out and I could find someone to come with me to come to LA or meet me in LA and do this show with me.

The night I was leaving for LA, somebody joined my team and put me as their sponsor, and they lived and hour and a half from LA and I had never talked to this person before.  I was like “Oh My Gosh this is like a total answer to my prayers!”  I called her and was like “Welcome! I’m so excited for you!  Guess what?!  I’m coming to LA tomorrow.  Do you want to come help me with this event.” And she did.  Talk about an answer to prayers, right?!

Anyways, I went to LA, right, and I was exhausted because I’d done 2 shows out of state the 2 weeks prior.  And the driving and I was just so exhausted and being stressed that I didn’t have a place to say, because I usually just stay with people I know.  I was gonna sleep in my car.

I get to LA and I could feel my voice going and I was getting sick.  And I’d paid all this money and I have all this jewelry, right.  To have an $1100 booth fee, you have to have a lot of jewelry to sell at least $3000 in 3 days.  I needed to make at least $2700 to pay for the booth jewelry and the gas down and everything and here I am getting sick.  I sounded like a frog.  I have this new person show up that’s never done Paparazzi.  She had only been to 1 party. Luckily I had her though!

The event did not go amazing.  We’ll just say that.  I only sold like $2400.  I didn’t sell as much as I wanted.  I couldn’t talk and I was just so disappointed.  I don’t know. It was a great learning experience.

Maybe I pushed a little too hard, got a little too big.  But at the time, I thought things would be ok because my husband had a job and I was earning extra money.  That was probably one of my worst moments in Paparazzi when I’m doing this big show and I sound like a frog.  And my throat was killing, and felt overwhelmed and exhausted and like “What did I get myself into?!”

But I came home and recovered and hit Fashionista that month and that helped ease some of the stress and the money issues.  The person that came and helped me she booked a couple of parties from it.

I just realized one event is not my whole business and it’s not going to determine if my business is successful or not successful.  It is just one event of many and I can move on.  And I did.  I‘ve moved on and learned from it.  But I still remember that one time that I did that really expensive show out of state with almost no help and I couldn’t talk.

Awnya: That would be completely scary.  I admire you for taking that big of a risk.  And I think that’s kind of the message that comes out to me in all of that is you’ve gotta take risk in order to get rewards.  I’m not talking like 3, $1100 shows in a month.  I mean if that is your cup of tea, do it.  But if you don’t put yourself out there, if you don’t try things you’ve never tried, then you’re not going to get the big results.

And Michelle went out there and did these shows, even though some of them didn’t turn out exactly how she wanted, she’s gotten the results because she took risks in her business.

Now Michelle, what lesson do you want Paparazzi to learn from that?

Michelle: There’s a few things I’ve learned from this.

1- You don’t have to do really expensive booth fees to grow your business. I don’t do shows like that anymore because I decided in looking at numbers and everything that I could use my time and energy more effectively elsewhere than traveling out of state and doing these huge shows.  They can be fun, but I don’t always think they are the most effective thing.

2- Plan ahead and be ready for the unexpected. I learned after that month and those 3 events that that’s not my business.  That’s not where I want to be doing the business.  I want to be doing the business on a smaller or medium show level. And doing things more locally or through social media rather than having to put myself out there and having to travel and all that stuff.

Awnya: I like how you try it.  Like, some people they just say “Oh, I’m not a Facebooker, I don’t do Facebook parties.”  They never try it.  But you’ve been there, you’ve tried it and now you can be educated when you say “It’s not my thing, right”

Michelle: And you know what? I’ve been able to help other people for their bigger shows and help them prepare, so I’m glad that I did it.  I’ve done everything.  And as a leader I feel like I can say “I’ve done everything.  What do you need help with? I can help you with that.”  I’ve been here and done that so I can help them with that.  I’ve done bigger shows so I know what to expect.

What is a habit you have that you feel contributes to your success?

Michelle: I think I have a habit of just going for things and just putting it all out there and going BIG.  Not even going big, but going hard.  You know in everything I do,  I just do it.  When I first started, that’s what I did and I feel like just going for it and not thinking about it too much or analyzing and doubting – I don’t do that.

You go for it and give it your all and you’ll be a lot more successful than if you are like “Oh, I’ll try.“ or “Oh I’ll just do this little thing here and see if it works and then if it works then I’ll do a little bit more.” But if you go for it and you give it your all at the very beginning, you’re going to have a lot more success and a lot more results than if you just do a little here and there.  And in the end, you are going to be a lot more successful when you give it your all then if you just give it a little effort.

Consistency is huge.  I have a habit of being consistent.  If you’re consistent in your business you are going to have more business.  And then another thing that I feel like I have a habit of doing is just being nice to people.  Talking to people.  Like caring about people.

Paparazzi, any business, is a people business, right?!  You might be selling a product, but if you want people to join your team, if you want customers and hostesses to come back over and over and over and over again, you have to build relationship and you have to care about people.  So I feel like if you have a habit of caring about people and, you know, keeping in touch with people then your business will be a lot stronger.

I could talk about a million habits that I feel like contribute to a successful business, but I think those are 3 big ones.  Going for it, being consistent and just being a people person and talking with people and caring about people and letting them know that because when you show that you care about them and that you’re their friend, they are going to come back to you over and over again instead of just having to keep finding new people to sell to and host and join and all of that.

Awnya: I’m going to draw a quick correlation here.  At convention, I want to say it was last year, there was a consultant I was talking to.  And I love hippie headbands, since the day they came out, I wear Hippie Headbands all the time.  So I’m at convention and a consultant comes up to me she is like “Oh my gosh! Those look so good on you, I could never wear that.” And I said to her “Girl, what is stopping you?  Like, put it on and just rock it.  You are just overanalyzing it.“

She said “I’m too old to wear it,” and I said “No you are not.  Just put it on and you rock it cuz you are what you say you are.”  So jumping back to your first point there.  Don’t overanalyze.  Don’t psych yourself out.  Like, she totally rocked a hippie headband. It was all in her head that she couldn’t do it.

Stop psyching yourself out.  Go big or go home.  Just do it. Stop putting these limitations on yourself.  Your business is not going to thrive if you are putting limitations on it.  Take the first step.  Get there. Do it.

Michelle: If you would have asked me when I joined Paparazzi if I could see myself where I am now?  No way.  Absolutely no way.  When I heard Robin Frank say she got a $5000 check, it was like “Oh my gosh!  That would be amazing to make that much money. But I don’t know if that is me.  Like, I don’t know that I can do that.”

 And yet, after I kept hearing a couple of stories I was like, I’m gonna go for it.  I know that this can change my life.  And I did.  I went for it.  Those stories are really motivating.  When you hear people say they started in the same place where you are and now I’m here.  But it is work and consistency and just doing it.

Awnya: One step at a time, right?

Michelle: Yep!

What advice would you give to a brand new consultant?

Michelle: Go for it.  Go for it! Go big.  Don’t think, “Oh, I hope I can sell 10 pieces at my launch party.” You are going to sell 50 pieces at your launch party.  Be confident that this business is going to work for you.  And if you’re confident in that, then you are going to treat it like it’s going to work for you.

Get your jewelry in front of lots of people.  Don’t be afraid.  Don’t make excuses.  Like “I can’t do this because my house is too small.”  I hear excuses all the time. But if you want this, you’ll just go out and make it happen and you’ll do it.  I had a 5 week old and a 3 year old and a 5 year old and my husband worked full time and I babysat kids in my home for the first 5 or 6 months while I was doing Paparazzi.  And I had a blog and I had church calling and all this stuff.  My life was busy.

 I just went out and made it work. You just have to go out and make it work.  And be excited.  If you act intimidated, if you act shy, if you act like “Oh, ya know, like, if you wanna come to my party, like, that’d be cool,“ you’re not going to get the same response as if you go out and say “I’m so excited.  I have this awesome product, it’s only $5.  It will help you look beautiful and it will save you money.  Come to my party.  On (whenever you’re doing it.)“ You’re going to get better participation.

And then once you get the people to see the jewelry you need to keep in touch with people that like your product.  One of my biggest, biggest, biggest regrets is that in the past 5 years, if I would have kept all the email addresses of the people that bought from me or the people who said they wanted me to keep in touch and I didn’t, I would have a list of like 5000 people that said “I like your stuff” and I don’t have that because I didn’t keep in touch with people

Awnya: So many gems in that.  Keep in contact with people. That is huge.  Like, follow up is huge.  Relationships.  We’ve talked about that several times.  Relationships are huge.  Show that excitement.  You’ve got to be excited about the product.  I mean, you just joined the business, we know you are excited about it.  Don’t let those negative people get into you head or into your excitement.  Just block it out.  Show ‘um your excitement and then wear the product.

Be a product of the product.  You’ve gotta wear it.  And you never know when like your mailman or your neighbor across the street will be like “Cute headband. Where did you get it?”

Great point Michelle, I just love those.

If you could suggest 1 thing to a consultant who was feeling stuck in their business to get things jump started again, what would that be?

Michelle: It would be what I just talked about. Go back and contact your past customers, your past hostesses, your like past people that have shown interest in Paparazzi.  Do a Mystery Hostess party or another party.  Ask them if they want a bunch of free jewelry, you know?!

Show them some of the new pieces that are out.  I feel like the jewelry is so much cuter now than when I joined.  It just keeps getting better and better and better.  And if someone hasn’t bought from you in like a year, they may not know all the cute stuff that you have, so go out and contact the people that have supported you in the past.

Also, talk with those people that work in places with lots of other women and try to get baskets out.  If you go back to the people who have liked Paparazzi in the past, most of them are still going to like it. It’s just that maybe they don’t know that you are still selling it or maybe they haven’t heard from you in a long time.  So that would be my suggestion.  Go back to where you had success with people in the past and make that happen again.

Awnya: Now if I could add just 1 thing to that, it would be (and I’m sure you meant this because I just know you), I know that you didn’t mean to send a mass text to everybody begging for a party or go on Facebook and post it to your wall.  You have to do that PERSONAL contact people.  It’s the relationships.  Call them on the phone.  Talk to them in person.

Michelle: Maybe I should say, “make a personal contact.”  I’m a firm believer that if you are face to face or if you are talking to somebody in person, it’s a lot more effective than just posting something on you wall or mass texts or group messages.  They don’t…  No. No.  No no no no.  It’s personal.  Everything you should do is personal, personal, personal.  If all you do is rely on 1 post on your wall, “I’m going to post this on my wall and if it doesn’t work, this is the end.” You aren’t going to be very successful.  I’m just putting that out there.  Like, you have to make it personal.

I get mass invitations to parties all the time.  I see people post all over their walls about stuff.  I don’t volunteer.  If they really want me to come to a party, if they really want me to help them with their business, they are going to ask me personally.  They aren’t going to do a group whatever.  Or just put it on the wall.  That takes no effort to put something on their wall.

Awnya: Call up those people on the phone.  I know it’s scary!  Do some jumping jacks get some anxiety out of you however you do it.  Make it about the relationship.  Offer to make it a theme party, do whatever you gotta do but it has to be personal.

What is a quote that inspires you?

Michelle: How can you just narrow it down to one quote?  Right?!  It’s by Pele. He’s a soccer player.  He said:

I know that success is not an accident.  Like I didn’t just join Paparazzi and “Oh my gosh. I’m successful! Holy cow, I don’t know how’d that happen?”  It is not an accident it is work!  Sometimes its sacrifice.  I still listen to training calls.  I am learning from other people.  I’m studying what the other successful consultants in our company are doing and trying to share that.  It’s not an accident people.  You gotta go out there and work it!

Awnya:  Its hard work, right?! It’s blood sweat and tears.  But that’s what makes it so rewarding!

Michelle: Every once in a while a little bit of blood but not much, luckily.

A: It would ruin the jewelry if you bleed too much, right?

Michelle: yeah.

What would you say is a must read and why?

Michelle: When you hit Executive Producer in the company, they send you the book How to Win Friends and Influence People by Dale Carnegie, (and I think they still do that).  This is probably one of the most read books or inspirational books or whatever category you want to put it in – of all time.  And I can see why.  When you are in a business, how to win friends and influence people is something you want to do.  You want to build the relationship. You want to influence people in a positive way, this book just – everything about it is good.  It can help you in every part of your life not just in business.

So that’s a good one. There’s a reason why it’s one of the most popular books of all time

Last questions.  Give us a parting piece of guidance. 

Build relationships in your business.  Build them with your customers, build them with your hostesses, build them with your teammates.  If you have them with those 3 groups of people, you are going to have a business.  If you don’t have any relationships, your business is going to be way, way, way harder and not as fun!  Right?!  Relationships are what make a business fun.  So I would say build relationships.

If you are at a party, joke around with people.  Have fun.  Don’t be anti-social.  Care about them.  I have customers who have kids with cancer or who have lost family members.  I have done nice things for them not just because they are my customer, but because they are my friend also and I like to show that I care.  Make people your friends.  Have fun with this business.  Get out there and talk to people.

Get it in front of people whether it is in person or on the computer, you just have to get it out of your house.

Today we chat with Paparazzi Jewelry Elite Leader, Robin Frank. Robin is an amazing leader, grandmother and friend.  She is a cancer survivor and one of the most positive and uplifting people I know.  She loves sharing and training other consultants and has some amazing stories and advise to share with you!

Today we have on the show Robin Frank.  Robin is married to Tom and the mother of 4 boys and 1 girl.
Her daughter is Brittany and she is Robin’s best friend and business partner. Robin has 12 ½ grand kids, including 2 sets of twins, and all are under the age of 7!

Robin is a Maven A-lister in Paparazzi and has a Channel purse!!  She ROCKS that purse!  You will see her sporting it around convention this year (don’t miss it!!)

Robin Started Paparazzi Sept 26, 2010 and has consultant number 1028.  The Consultant numbers started out at 1000, so Robin was one of the first 28 people to join Paparazzi.  Robin lives in Draper Utah which is in the Salt Lake City area.

What is your Paparazzi Why?

Robin:  My husband is a realtor, Tom is a realtor.  We were flipping homes and Brittany, our daughter was our assistant. Life was going well for us and we were doing well and then 2008-2009 the real estate market crashed.  We lost 7 properties to foreclosure and short sales.  As many of you know, when finances come up you kind – when you don’t have enough money to pay your bills, it weighs on you.  I gained weight and didn’t want to be around anyone and I just felt horrible.

One day, Brittany hauled me to a show at a convention center called What a Woman Wants.  We went in there and walked around and just looked at stuff.  We found a five dollar jewelry booth.  We went in there and we though “this is cool” and I figured I could buy a necklace for five bucks.  That was really all I could afford cuz I had no income.

Brittany and Misty and Rachel Kirby talked me into wearing a headband.  At this time I was 55.  I mean, I wore a headband when I was 12. So that was the beginning.   And they told me “You wear a headband and wear it around this show and if you don’t like that, you bring it back.”  I do that all the time now!  I tell people, “you buy this headband and you wear it around and if you don’t like it, you can bring it back, you don’t have to keep it!”

So I walked around and it was ok but nothing wonderful happened.  They next day was Sunday and I wore it to church.  And for several months I’d felt like this big fat looser.  When I went to church, 3 or 4 people stopped me and told me I looked really nice.  They didn’t say “oh, you have a really cool headband”, they just noticed that I looked really nice that day.  It changed my life.

We had Misty’s card so we called her the next day.  When we had been at the event the day before, we sat and watched the booth and they were always busy and there were tons of people walking around with these little pink bags.  And we needed a job.  So the next day we called and then drove down to Hurricane Utah which was 4 hours away and purchased jewelry (which I had no money to buy). And then drove home.   I don’t’ know about any of you that have started. But when you get your first kit or get so excited and jump into in and then on the way home I had this remorse and I thought “what have I done.  I’m a looser, I have no money.”

But we came home and jumped in and went 90 miles an hour.  And we put every penny right back into our business.  We bought 1000 pieces to start with for $3000.  We did shows and 2 and 3 home parties a day.  I would do one and Brittany would do one that same night.  This was September.  We didn’t pull one penny out of our business.  We soaked every penny back into our business .  All we did was buy more jewelry and pay our credit card minimum payment which was $25 a month.

We just went to town. We loved selling jewelry.  That is my biggest why.  I know we can change a woman’s life by putting a $5 item on her and I’m not asking her to break he bank.  I don’t’ know what her financial situation is, I don’t know what she has at home.  All I know is that I can put a piece of jewelry on someone and they stand a little taller and they’ll smile. And someone will tell them they look beautiful .  And that’s why I do Paparazzi.

That was the beginning.  WE just got going and thing were wonderful.  We’d never been in direct sales before.  Brittany is my best friend and business partner and things were going along just great and then Brittany got pregnant with twins.  She had her 2 babies at 25 weeks.  Little 2 pound boys.  They were there for 2 ½ months.  As mom and grandma we kinda checked out for a while.

Ya never know what happens in life.  We went through the financial thing and paparazzi pulled us through.  And then we went through the medical thing and our Paparazzi sisters were there for us and pulled us through.   If we needed some extra money we could go out on the weekend and sell!  And then I ended up with cancer and almost died!  The last Why of my life is all these sweet Paparazzi sisters who have become my sisters who have prayed me better and lifted me up when I didn’t want to live anymore.

I love selling jewelry and I love the relationships I have.  And that’s why I love selling jewelry.

What is your worst Paparazzi moment?

Robin: I love, love, love doing large events.  WE do everything we can find.  Fights, races, dance competitions, fights, gun shows.  Anything we can think of where we will find a woman or some women.  So we found this fight – it was a boxing match or ultimate fighting.  It was a $50 booth fee and from 6pm till midnight.  It was a last minute thing cuz I just found it.  When I got there, I didn’t have any bags.  I really wasn’t prepared!   How do you go to a show and not have bags to put your jewelry in?!  My niece was with me and ran and found some clear plastic bags for us, so we were all set up and ready to go.

 They were starting to come in for the fight.  It was in October and at this fight a lot of people came dressed up.  It was near Halloween.  Again, I’d only been doing Paparazzi for about a month.  I wasn’t sure I knew what I was doing. But they came in, hundreds and hundreds of women.  They set us up in the foyer where they bought their tickets and then everyone went in to find their seats in the fight in the arena.  And we’re out there with some t-shirt people and some food people.

Ladies would come along and I’d talk to them and show them the jewelry and they’d say “Yeah, that’s great.  I’ll come back later”.  Well as the night progressed, everyone got drunk.  You’d think that would be a good night.  Because they are drinking and they will come and spend more money.  Well, very few people even came to my booth.  I did sell one bracelet in 6 hours and the booth fee was $5.  I sold one bracelet.  There were some girls who came over right near my booth she threw up all over the floor.  It was awful.  “Oh, I kept thinking why did I do this?”  Why, why, why???  And we do that!  We get in to these boutiques and events and we don’t make enough money, we go in the hole, we are thrown up upon and I thought “I will never do a fight again.”

But we learned.  And the one thing I did learn was I met a photographer there who taught us and trained us in taking pictures.  At the time we didn’t have stock photos that we could use with Paparazzi and three people picked up my card, well, several did but 3 called me back, and I got 3 parties off of that.

And I learned a lot about fighting that night!  Then when it was over because so many people had been drinking a lot, the underdog won, the gentleman that was next to me selling t-shirts said “you girls better get out of here” so we packed up and left.  So do every event, everything you can and learn from it and go forward and you never go in the hole.

 I believe, I truly believe, that God puts us in places as stepping stones to learn for the next thing.  He taught me a lot of lessons there that I will never forget and it doesn’t matter what I do, I will always learn something!  So look for the things you are learning, the little gifts you are given to learn from in every instance you are at.  It’s not always about the money,  it’s about the relationships and the next thing that he is leading you to.

Awnya:  Another thing that I kinda want to bring out just a little bit more is that after wards, you only sold one bracelet, but afterwards people called you!  You thought it was a horrible event and you still got things afterwards.  So ladies, even if you are doing an event and you are totally bombin, hand out those cards, talk to people, talk to the other vendors there.  See what other relationships you can build.  You  never know, you might have someone call you in a week and say  “Hey, I want to join your business.” Or “hey I wanna do a party for you”.  You just never know.

Robin: The photographer did join as a matter of fact.  She really did.  And one of the people called me, it was about 6 or 8 months later.   And she said, “I had your card and I say you at a fight” and I was like “Where did you see me?”  I had really kinda tried to put that out of my head.  But, yeah!  It was good.

A: What habit do you have that contributes to your success, Robin?

Robin:  The one think that I feel like I would like to suggest to everyone or what I love to do is I love to smile and I love people.  My life has been so touched by people that love me that I feel like that if I can just reach into anyone’s little heart because there’s a lot of people out there that are having sad days.  And if you can send them just a little bit of love, and I always talk about Paparazzi everywhere I go.

I always wear a headband.  I always wear bracelets and a necklace because it’s a conversation starter.  And I’m Paparazzi’s advertisement,  I’m the billboard.  I feel that people look and me and know that my jewelry makes me happy!  It does!  So always smile and love the people around you.  I think that’s been my best success habit.

What advice would you give to a brand new consultant just starting out?

Robin:  Just exactly what we just talked about.  Number one, have information, have a business card, a flyer, carry it with you everywhere!  But BE the advertisement.  LIVE Paparazzi and smile and love the people around you.  If you go out and open your mouth.  I’m telling you there are some consultants out there who have grown so quickly just because they love the product and they talk about it.

When I first started, at my first party I stood in the back corner and somebody said “well, who do I pay?” and I raised my hand “over here, over here.”  And now, I know that I just have to get out there.  You may not  know this but I was kind of a shy person.  Remember, I was the kind the looser and I’d  gained weight.  I don’t’ care what your personality is.  If you just smiel and just share with people why you started, it will change your business.  It will!  And make sure you give them your information.  Ya know, the jewelry sells itself.  So just share it with people.  Just open your mouth and talk about it everywhere you go.

Awnya:  I love it!  I love how SIMPLE that is.  You don’t need $400 to and buy business cards or to advertise on a billboard.  You have your smile all the time if you just wear it

Robin: and if you will smile when you are on the phone, I promise you people will feel that.  I mean, I can feel your smile, Awnya. You’re always smiling, you’re so sweet.  Awnya’s always happy, bless her heart.  And you feel that, you feel their smile even on the phone or whenever you talk to them.

If you could give one piece of advice to a consultant who is feeling stuck in their business, what would that be?

Robin:  bnI would tell them to call their downline.  Call their team.  Call their friends.  If they are just starting out and don’t’ know where to get started, call someone in Paparazzi.  But if you have a little team going and you haven’t made contact with them, Oh my gosh!  Then all you have to do is call them and let them know that you love ‘um and care about ‘um.  And that is something that has really opened my eyes that I’ve tried to start doing in the last little bit.  Misty pushes that a lot.  Make a phone call.  We’re all texters or we message a lot but that personal contact means the world and it changes your life.

It does!  Whenever I’m feeling down all I have to do is talk to a couple people and I just live my life.  So pick up the telephone . That’s the best.

What is a quote that inspires you?

Robin:  My favorite quote is Love your Life.  Because I didn’t love my life for a long time.  Sometimes you don’t love who you are or how you look, how you feel or how much money you have or what your weight is.  But with every step you take every day if you think “I love my life, I love my life, I love my life.”   It’ll change your life.  It has changed mine!   6 months ago, I wasn’t where I am today.  A year ago I wasn’t where I am today.  But I’m so blessed and I love the life that God has given to me.

Awnya:  And you do, you embrace life.  That’s one of my favorite things about you.  No matter what stage you are in.  Even when you had your cancer and were at convention and you had lost all of your hair you were wearing a darling pink wig, you had given them out to everyone who was there that year.  And you got up on stage and you threw your wig out into the audience and you had the biggest smile on your face!  You just embrace loving your life, whatever stage you’re in.  It’s truly who you are!  I love that!

What book would you say is a must read and why?

Robin:  My very, very favorite book is The Secret.  I don’t care where I’m at with it.  When I’m feeling down.  And it’s all about “If you believe it, it will happen”.

I believe in vision boards and I believe in affirmations and that’s what The Secret is about.  If you believe it, and you declare it, it will happen.  I don’t care what it is.  You want a million dollars?  It will happen if you believe is and you put it on a vision board and you say it, it will happen.  You wanna be Maven A-lister and carry around a Channel Purse?  It will happen if you declare it!

Awnya: I have to tell you a story around that.  After Empower Me Pink this year, we came to your house for training afterwards.  Robin and Tom were talking about vision boards.   And so on the way home I was thinking about it – it’s about a4 hour drive for me.  So on the way home, I was thinking “Ok, what would I put in my vision board?  What are some things I want changed in my life?”   At the time – I’m gonna start crying now, Robin – we’d been living in an apartment.

The financial market that Robin was talking about, it hit us hard too.  We just had our house and we ended up having to short sale that.  And we were told we couldn’t buy a house for 7 years.  And so we were in the middle of that 7 years just waiting for time.  WE have 7 kids and then my husband and I and we were squished in a tiny 3 bedroom apartment.  We didn’t have a yard, we didn’t have even a garage.  We had a parking space that sometimes the neighbors would steal.

So on the way home, one of the first things I put on the list was a house.  I wanted a house so bad.   From what we’d been told several times we had to wait that full 7 years.  We had to wait.  So I put it on my vision board thinking, eventually, someday we’ll get into a house.  Well, this is June, so we are talking 3 months later.   And I’m talking to you today from my house!  YAY!!

We have a yard, garage, we have 4 bedrooms.  With 9 people its still a little squished, but it’s a house and it’s ours.  And it was on my vision board!

So even this thing that I never thought would be able to happen because of the past and everything, it totally happened, and in 3 months, Robin!!

Robin:  See?  See??  I’m telling you, Awnya!  It’s so Amazing!  I’ve known Awnya  for 3 years and I tell you, if there’s anything I can teach, anything, is that if you put it out there, all you have to do is ask.  And put it out there and believe!  Three months for you.  A HOUSE!!

Ok, last question, Robin!  What is a parting piece of guidance for us?

Robin:  Just love yourself and love your sisters. And to believe that you’re beautiful.  You make a difference in people’s lives!   I so believe that God gives us things.  I don’t believe in chance. I don’t think you just get things cuz you’re lucky.  I think God puts you in situations to learn and to grow and to help other people.

And it just makes me sad that so many people don’t believe their beautiful.  And it doesn’t matter how much money you have. I doesn’t matter what you need and what you want.  If you believe in yourself you can get it.
